Just getting a general consensus for my sister of what is normal and what isn’t I guess as she doesn’t have Mumsnet.
My sister is 28 and lives in a professional houseshare in a midlands city. She pays 800 a month for her room bills included but the room does have a tiny kitchenette. All the other housemates (6 of them) are over 25 and working professionals.
She’s lived in the area a year and house share 5 months and it’s been good so far but every three weeks, and it’s marked on an app the agent uses, the agent will enter the property to do room checks, and “fire alarm check, as well as checks of the communal area”.
This means that as sister is working from home and it’s happening so frequently, she cannot book meetings etc that day she doesn’t know what time during the day the agent is going to pop in to check her room. They usually say it’ll be between 9-5 and will not specify if asked. This also means that they come in and hold fire alarms down as well. This happens every 3 weeks.
Recently, she asked for a mattress replacement as hers was pretty bleak from the last tenant, it was dipped and even had bad (period stains) on the reverse when she tried to flip it. she was told she would be given a date in advance to when they would be delivering.
She then gets a text on Saturday saying mattress will be delivered (no notice before this) today- please make space for the delivery men. Unfortunately she was out at a wedding and had left clothes on her bed folded (clean washing). Despite ringing the agent to tell her she wasn’t in, they went ahead with the delivery anyway and entered her room. She then received this morning an email about the tidiness of her room and that the clothes were a hindrance and not acceptable level of tidiness and that it wasn’t nice for the delivery men to see her “ blood stained mattress” and she needs a topper.
Would you complain? I just feel like she pays so much and they’re in every 3 weeks, commenting on the tidiness, accusing her of marking a flipped mattress.
I probably sound too invested but my sister has had issues with her mental health and this is the first time she’s been settled somewhere and also it’s a lot of money she’s paying so I want to know if it’s normal for an agent and if you’d say something.
She’s 5 months into a 12 month contract so leaving isn’t an option.
