.. to be in a complete pickle about which job to choose?

I know I'm super lucky, I have two job offers, but I can't get comfortable with my decision.

Job 1. Law firm located in the city (in a non-lawyer role), good transferrable career prospects, interesting people and role, likely some international travel. 1.5 hours travel each way (drive to Tube and catch the one train all the way to a few mins from the office, live at the end of the line so guaranteed a seat in the morning). Some nice perks like free food in the office.

Job 2. Gambling company, outside of London. Ok for career within my niche specialism but not the same broad appeal as the law firm. Currently offering less but I know from email convo with HR that they will match the offer from job 1 if I say I'll definitely accept. 45 mins-ish drive each way. Slightly better pension, potentially over twice the bonus BUT Glassdoor reviews suggest they haven't really paid bonuses since the company was hit by the pandemic. HR can't/won't give me any information on recent bonus payouts to confirm that.

I've already accepted job 1 because offer 2 only came in after their deadline to respond had passed. In my head, I think I'm already going to job 1 but I worry I'm being unreasonable to not further entertain the possibility of the higher bonus and less travel.

Any thoughts? Thank you!

Job 1 sounds better to me - job 2 sounds a bit as though they might mess you around. The being cagey about bonuses would worry me; They might be promising the earth and never deliver.
If things went well in job 1 could you consider moving closer?

Job 1.

Thanks @Clarinet1 , I get that cagey feeling too. I couldn't move closer and wouldn't want to, to be honest, we're really happy where we are just outside of London. Not many locations are convenient from here but it's a nice place to live and bring up the kids!

Job 1 sounds better. I know the commute is longer but most of it is on the train and you can relax and use that time to de stress, rather than having to drive and battle through traffic.
Also are gambling companies more at risk of liquidation?

firebrand123 · 25/06/2024 13:48

Thanks @Bluevelvetsofa

@ilovepixie thanks for your thoughts too! Good question about the risk of liquidation. I guess that's one thing with the law firm, they're likely to be very stable. They're not one of the very biggest but they are multinational with a solid client base and reputation.

Another vote for job 1
