And this is news?

AirportObs · 25/06/2024 08:41

The link is to the BBC website regarding useable PPE costing £1.4 billion being wasted, being incinerated. Not forgetting the further £100million in sorting the PPE.

Is it not?

It's shocking but I'm not sure there is corruption, just mis management. Surely when Ppe gets within a year of its expiry date you should just start giving it out from free to any trust or care home that wants it, rather than have it go to waste

RiverF · 25/06/2024 08:58

This one isn't corrupt, afaik there was no link to government?

I'm not even sure it was incompetence TBH. At the time it was important to source the PPE and no one knew how long it would be needed for.

There was corruption and incompetence, but I'm not sure this was it.

Kovus · 25/06/2024 09:00

There is much more going on than this. Subtle corruption in many places across private and public life. If the right conditions exist in which it can proliferate, it will flourish.

AstonMartha · 25/06/2024 09:05

So incensed that you can’t explain what has made you so angry and instead just post a link. Use your words.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 25/06/2024 09:24

IMO this is a non-issue.
Tonnes of out of date ppe/medication/needles/syringes/bandages etc are chucked every day. I've just disposed of a bagful myself from my child's emergency pack because (fortunately) we didn't use it.
It sounds more like over ordering stuff which has now expired to me.
I imagine if not enough had been ordered the govt would be criticised for that as well 😂

Dymaxion · 25/06/2024 09:35

A lot of the PPE we used was out of date anyway, except they stuck stickers over the old expiry dates with new expiry dates on. Apparently the old expiry dates didn't count or something.

MichaelFabricantsSyrup · 25/06/2024 09:47

I'd rather they went after the ones that purchased a yacht with their government funds whilst managing not to supply anything fit for purpose (and sitting in the House of Lords)

Not corruption, doesn’t seem like the business did anything wrong. They supplied useable and correct products quickly. This is one squarely at the door of politicians/procurement/a civil servant somewhere. I don’t understand why the PPE could not be used in hospitals/care homes/labs etc?

The waste is staggering.

TaraTories · 25/06/2024 09:55

I posted about this elsewhere this morning too. Disgusting waste and huge pollution. A few very rich people were made out of tragedy.
Let's vote them out.

You just lob it out of the car window when you go past a patch of land do you?
They've dumped this after making sure their friends got rich from it. The amount spent here could be spent on NHS or SEN provision. No small potatoes.

malachitegreen · 25/06/2024 09:58

I dont see any corruption? What are you incensed about?

Atlastsomesun · 25/06/2024 10:06

I'm with you, OP. The sheer, stinking waste and incompetence of it all. Greed and immorality. Vile.

Thelnebriati · 25/06/2024 10:08

@TaraTories

You can hand it in at a pharmacy.

StGuffersOfTheVillage · 25/06/2024 10:09

I'm with you, OP. I can wrap my head around buying lots of PPE at the time (though cannot ever understand how they bought so much that was not up to standard - different topic). But surely, then the answer has been to not buy any more and use up the stockpiles we had while they were still in date?

£1.5bn is a hell of a lot of money to just waste like this. Look at any of the manifestos - they are all having to explain how they would fund their porposals, down to the millions and this government here has wasted much more than that on a single contract.

timenowplease · 25/06/2024 10:10

Ignore the Government wonks OP. Of course YANBU.

Total incompetence and corruption.

StGuffersOfTheVillage · 25/06/2024 10:13

It actually gets worse...

"The Department for Health & Social Care (DHSC) lost 75% of the £12 billion it spent on personal protective equipment (PPE) in the first year of the pandemic to inflated prices and kit that did not meet requirements"

https://committees.parliament.uk/committee/127/public-accounts-committee/news/171306/4-billion-of-unusable-ppe-bought-in-first-year-of-pandemic-will-be-burnt-to-generate-power/

Tel12 · 25/06/2024 10:14

Some tried and tested suppliers couldn't get a look in. That smacks of more than incompetence. If you screwed up at work and lost 100k you'd probably get disciplinary action. 100m? Oh well these things happen.

A little clue as to what the OP on about isn't too much to ask for. Not everyone clicks on a link based on a random and evasive outrage post.

Perhaps not corruption then? I’m not sure what to label it, but the waste. My cousin is a civil servant (nothing personal) she’s one of the most arrogant, self serving, obnoxious people I know! It worries me about the people making decisions in this country.

This was a ridiculous level of waste, as PP have said the sheer waste of money is obscene.

i do not know why it could not be used elsewhere?
