Has anyone made this move? Could you give me any opinions as to where I would have best quality of life.

I have looked at a few towns and am considering Chelmsford. Important things to me would be, pretty town centre, clean streets, nice environment,

Scotland is great but I can’t cope with the terrible weather

What are you actually asking?

greencartbluecart · 24/06/2024 08:02

Scotland is huge and incredibly varied

If you don't like the weather and are in the west go east
Unless you like extreme heat don't go south for the weather

Chelmsford is much noisier, smellier, busier than Scotland and has much less sense of community than Scotland

Chelmsford is ok. A bit soulless, but some people like it. I think there are better towns in Essex like Brentwood (though it’s more expensive), and much better ones if you don’t need to be walkable distance to a station.

Chelmsford is a very nice place to live. Nice town centre. Plenty to do. It is also surrounded by some lovely villages. Good commute to London too

The accent grates on me somewhat. I also think it's quite anti Scottish. Not as friendly- no strangers chatting at bus stops. House prices are crazy.

But yeah it rains less and actually has a summer.

Go to the east coast or up to nairn, the weather is drier there

Your title is Glasgow or Essex but then you mention Scotland?
Is it Glasgow or the whole of Scotland you're asking about?

Chelmsford is absolutely not anti Scottish.

Someone up thread mentioned Chelmsford as being a bit sole less. I think that's accurate. Its pretty clean, tidy, has a good range of shops and entertainment. But leaves me a bit cold. I prefer other Essex towns, like Colchester which is dustier, rougher and has less top brand shopping. But feels like it has a bit more character.

Commute from Chelmsford is good though, so good for days out in London, and Essex in general has great weather for the UK. Lots of very nice small towns and villages around, especially north of the county and coastal.

Chelmsford I don't consider has a partially strong accent anymore. Its gone all posh and expensive since it became a city the accents tend to be a bit sole less to match the City.

If you want flights you can take a train to Southend airport which is so small its like flying from a private airfield or you can get the bus to Stansted and loads of options.

Chelmsford is a great base......but I wouldn't choose it!
