To ask why we don't use emojis here?

You hardly ever see them and yet other such forums are stuffed with them.

I'm not for or against them by the way, I'm just wondering how the natural evolution of the written word has seemingly stalled on MN.

Nice

ASighMadeOfStone · 20/06/2024 10:27

Well, that escalated. And here's me thinking we could have an interesting chat about David Crystal.

Auntieobem · 20/06/2024 10:28

Agree with @MigGirl In days gone by anyone using emojis was quickly told to get to net mums - viewed as an altogether much more sparkly site.

MigGirl · 20/06/2024 10:23

As an old timer I'll tell you why. You couldn't originally. I think there was a few limited ones, but if you went over onto Netmums 🤔 they would use a whole host of emojis it kind of set the two sites apart.

I mean they even hand banners with signatures on their site. They still exist but don't seem to be as popular as they used to be. There was quite a bit of competition between the two sites in the early days. It's taken me a while to realise there are a lot more emojis on here now 😅 🙃. **

MN was the outlier in that sense though - most forums allowed banners, signatures and avatars in those days, I think they all used the same platform.

MartyFunkhouser · 20/06/2024 10:31

Bit like swearing, you can be able to express yourself but also enjoy throwing in profanities. I like an emoji. Not enough on MN imo, especially as you don’t need to use ‘theirs’.

I remember in the old days 👵🏻 on here you had to enclose a word in [ ] to get the emoji. And at Christmas or Halloween they’d change.

Look, I'm no Barthes but I can string a decent sentence together and even I will use the occasional 🤪

I'm a grown up with an above average IQ and I use them all the time. Didn't realise I wasn't allowed🤭

Didn't people overdo the boob emoji?

No you not allowed 😞 according to some people.

Like @MigGirl it was a real differentiator in the olden days between Netmums and Mumsnet. I couldn't stand all the emojis and ticker bars and visual clutter of NM (and other fora) and vastly preferred the clean and mostly text based chat over here.

The punctuative use of the occasional Flowers or Grin is all I need!!

AstonMartha · 20/06/2024 10:38

We didn’t originally as we had disabled posters who used readers. They only read the written word and not emojis. This was a time where we liked each other (mostly) so we didn’t use them.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/06/2024 10:43

I know and use a few, but they can be annoying as you have to look some up.

Riversideandrelax · 20/06/2024 10:45

I think they are used but not as much. I used to like the specific Mumsnet emojis (is there any way to access them anymore?) especially the confused face! I wish it was a normal emoji!

CormorantStrikesBack · 20/06/2024 10:46

I remember it being discussed about 20 years ago and general consensus was emojis were a bit Netmums. 😂

LaMarschallin · 20/06/2024 10:49

Just heard that a post of mine had been deleted.
Because of an emoji, funnily enough.
Best use ODFOD.

Maybe because we're grown ups and can express ourselves clearly?

But non-verbal communication is a big thing for humans - even adults! 😄

norfolkbroadd · 20/06/2024 10:06

I'm not talking about the BiscuitFlowersArchersSadGinFlowers MN emojis. I'm talking about your everyday emojis such as 😂

Hang on! How do you get those MN emojis?!

unsync · 20/06/2024 10:51

🙄My favourite, very succinctly sums up what I feel about most of the fuckwittery. Also, 💐because sometimes there are no words.

Open reply box. Select smiley icon, bottom right of box. Select the M at the extreme right of the list.

Well I think these people need to get a life if emojis is something to get riled up over😜

Open reply box. Select smiley icon, bottom right of box. Select the M at the extreme right of the list.

Or just type the keyboard shortcuts if you remember them - [ confused ] without the spaces gives Confused. They never went away.

Thank you!! This is my favourite one Confused - how confused I often feel on here!!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 20/06/2024 11:14

grin
hmm
sad
angry
flowers
envy
smile
gin
shock

Can't remember the others. You type one of the above words but put it in square brackets, no spaces between brackets and letters. Not sure if capital letters matter.
