Neighbour's dog barking

Hello,

I live in a terrace house and my adjoined neighbours have just got adopted a Romanian street dog aged 6 months old. The dog is a very reactive barker but the biggest issue is he barks continuously when the owners are in the kitchen. The house is open plan, so when they are in the kitchen cooking, eating and washing up they have put in what looks like a child gate in the living room so he is contained in there while they are in the kitchen/dining room. As it is open plan he can see them at all times but I guess not being able to leave the living room/segregation is causing him to bark.

It's been 3 months so still likely settling in and I am wondering if he will eventually get used to this and stop barking or if this is an ineffective strategy? The barking happens at a time when I have just finished work and want to settle down and it's very disruptive. The neighbour on the other side is also finding the evening barking very difficult.

Would I be unreasonable to ask them about trying something different, or be patient and wait for him to learn this routine?

I would go carefully on this one as I am sure you don't wish to fall out with your neighbours
Perhaps you could mention it next time you see them and say something like "I was wondering if your dog is OK as I have heard him barking quite a lot and wondered if he is OK". Sometimes people don't realise they are causing distress to others.

Thank you, I think the issue is they are right there, it is not as if they are leaving him and he is barking without them knowing
