Rose wine £22 and it’s only 9.5%!

In a bar tonight. Just ordered a bottle of rose at £22 and I’ve just seen on the label it’s 9.5% proof. Is this not a piss take? Anything less than 11% seems like low alcohol to me! Too late to swap it as I’ve opened it. Not a happy camper.

Rosè Is usually lower alcohol isn't Itunless it's white zinfandel or something. £22 though!

Mrsjayy · 19/06/2024 21:13

I think 8% is considered low alcohol.

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 19/06/2024 21:14

I'd be right fucked off - what's the name of it ?

£22 fucking quid!! Should have swapped it. Opened it before I realised. 😭

It’s Zinfandel so yes, it is low alcohol wine.

XenoBitch · 19/06/2024 21:21

I remember paying £18 for a bottle of Echo Falls in a restaurant.

Buryyiirwhat · 19/06/2024 21:27

If it’s getting pissed you want get a few tequila shots…

FuzzyStripes · 19/06/2024 21:29

Surely nobody drinks cheap rose (and Zinfandel is cheap, regardless of the price you pay for it) to get drunk.

LoveWine123 · 19/06/2024 21:31

Why are you bothered by the specific percentage of alcohol? Will you be enjoying the taste of the wine more if the percentage was higher…are you mainly looking to get drunk?

gingercat02 · 19/06/2024 21:45

White Zinfandel is shit wine full stop, but decent rosé is expensive, all wine is. They need a mark up to make a profit.
We paid £36 for a reasonable Rioja tonight

Blondiebeachbabe · 19/06/2024 21:47

Just feel they shouldn’t sell low alcohol wine at full price really!

Are you in a Wetherspoon/nandos?

Generally, expect to pay a minimum of 3 times retail for drinking out on wine.

Gingerdancedbackwards · 19/06/2024 22:03

Not a proper rose!

AlfrescoPotato · 19/06/2024 22:03

I’d be more upset by how naff Zinfandel tastes than the alcohol content!

ZenNudist · 19/06/2024 22:06

Loving this! So you think you should pay less because of lower alcohol content? 🤣

ArabellaFishwife · 19/06/2024 22:07

That stuff is rank. But YANBU to be pissed off at the 9% abv.

RockaLock · 19/06/2024 22:10

YABU to drink White Zinfandel. We went on a vineyard tour in the Napa Valley years ago and even the employee running the wine tasting session wouldn't have a swig of it (he did have some of all the other wines though).

I can't say I've ever looked at the alcohol percentage on a bottle of wine. Is that a thing nowadays, to check it?

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 19/06/2024 22:11

£22 is pretty cheap for any bottle of wine in a bar surely??? I would have thought even Wetherspoons was more expensive!

Shrugsandruns · 19/06/2024 22:28

I don’t get it. You never get wine that cheap out - and if you do it’s clearly a crap wine like Zinfandel. It’s a sweet rose.

But that’s the alcohol content of that type of wine. It’s not marketed as low alcohol.

Speak for yourself lol

Though I do agree that you shouldn't really drink anything if it's just with the aim of getting more sloshed and so thinking of percentage and more bang for your buck? Otherwise everybody would be on the super strength cider that turns your insides out or the nasty off brands vodkas sold in the off license. Gross lol.

There's a certain logic to that. After all, minimum alcohol unit pricing exists (in Scotland). If you have to pay more (because you must pay at least X per unit) for higher alcohol content, it also follows you should pay less if there's a lower alcohol content. Admittedly, there is such a mark-up in bars and restaurants that the legal minimum unit price isn't going to be a concern.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 20/06/2024 00:10

Just pick up a bottle of meths on the way home?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 20/06/2024 00:54

Sorry but Zinfandel is an entry level wine…most California wines are crap in my opinion.. and it seems to be a no name winery at best.

All that being said Zinfandel is low alcohol content by nature so that shouldn’t be a surprise.

Oh and since I’m being honest I haven’t actually done the math on alcohol content vs price since my poor student days so maybe you need to get past that.
