Need help quick, please! Disabled tax exemption on car, need it removed asap

Just bought a new to me car from a private seller - they didn't tell me it had a disabled tax exemption. I need to drive the car today but the dvla website is saying I have to send a form off and it can take up to 6 weeks to be removed?

Seller left for work an hour ago and isn't answering my messages and I'm stranded on a farm with no way home unless I tax the car or wait until my husband finishes work at 9pm tonight. No taxis available either unfortunately and I live 50 miles away so no chance of walking!

Any help welcome please!

My last car had a disabled tax exemption - I just drove to the post office and taxed it in there.

The form is a V62 (I think) which they’ll do for you over the counter

They sorted it for me there and then.

When I did it I had to go to a post office and pay my tax. I then had a form saying the car was taxed and the rest of the paperwork followed. It sounded complicated to me but the lady in the post office knew what was to be done and legal implications for driving.

Thanks - I'm not sure where the nearest post office is and I'd really rather not drive the car with no tax 😩

Will have a look for it though, thank you!

can you not tax it online? I have not been into a post office to tax a car for years.

Voerendaal · 18/06/2024 12:34

If your car is insured and mot’ed I can think the police are going to lose any sleep over you driving it untaxed for a day while you sort it out

reenon · 18/06/2024 12:35

Is the car still taxed? Check the dvla website, it can take 24 hours for it to show up as untaxed when the previous keeper changes the details online....

Do you have the new keeper slip? Telephone dvla 0300 123 4321 to pay by phone

Sorry ignore my previous post. You will probably have to go to post office. I thought now that car tax doesn’t transfer that you should be able to tax it from now.

Dvla have directed me to the post office too so I'm heading there now. Luckily there's on in the next town which should be able to help.

Drove to the post office with my bum clenching all the way. It's sorted now, just wish the seller had mentioned it before hand because I didn't need the stress! I test drove it on Sat and have been talking to them since then but not a peep about the tax. 😣
