Gawping at the royals has to stop

They are just people - no better, worse or more interesting than any other UK residents.

They're trussed up and put on show like animals in a zoo. No child should be wheeled out like this and gawped at. They're ordinary people in a fairly mediocre, mildly dysfunctional family, just like those found on any street in the UK.

We really need to mature as a country and put the whole pantomime of monarchy behind us. It reflects and entrenches the inequality that is so damaging to the UK. And the characters in the panto look bloody miserable.

The proles pay for them.

They need to give us something for our money.

Personally I'd like the monarchy to be abolished but I doubt it will be in my lifetime.

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 16/06/2024 21:51

Eh I can’t get worked up about it. They want their money they gotta put on the show 🤷🏼‍♀️.

It’s not like the bad old days when Diana was hounded. They have an awful lot of privacy. Every child out there has been forced to put on a scratchy dress and be polite and bored sometimes it’s just usually it’s for Auntie Mel’s wedding and not Trooping The Colour.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/06/2024 21:52

as should paying for them

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 16/06/2024 21:53

Meh.

They chose to put their children in weird sailor outfits and parade them about.

They could leave the family and live a nice quiet life somewhere if they wanted.

hastalav · 16/06/2024 21:58

Ten minutes on stage, full make up and costumes. Play the part, exit stage left.

It's a very expensive play isn't it?

MeritocracyNotMonarchy · 16/06/2024 21:59

Of course - but they're not scrutinised by millions worldwide, through no choice of their own.

Why do we think these folk are worth looking at? They're just people.

Why are we still tolerating this infantile nonsense in 2024?

OP posts:
ForFirmBiscuit · 16/06/2024 22:00

That’s what I thought. I don’t understand the obsession? Why does anyone care about them more than any other family

Tis that. And the kids playing the child parts haven't even chosen to audition for them. They've just been told that they have to get up on the stage and perform.

The French saw the light centuries ago.

Get rid of the whole thing, open up the palaces to paying visitors, do re-enactments to tourists for money, and give us a mature democracy with equal opportunity for all.

They could give back their unearned billions stolen from the suffering of millions and fuck it all off if they wanted.

Sure this generation would still be of interest to the public but within 40 years it'd be diluted enough to have ended the charade.

But I think they quite like their unearned billions and literally being above the law in many respects.
So on balance, fuck them. They're a net negative for humanity and they do nothing to mitigate their harmful institution

Eastie77Returns · 16/06/2024 22:08

The whole thing is just weird. I mean, they just look so odd in that picture OP. The adults look completely miserable and the children dressed up like mini adults. Hard to believe that people queue up for hours to catch a glimpse of them. I suppose at least Louis looks set to provide some entertainment in the years to come. That yawn seems to be his party piece.

hastalav · 16/06/2024 22:09

I always feel that they are sniggering at us when they get off the stage. What suckers they are I hear them saying. And off they go for champers and a kick your shoes off hoolie.

Comedycook · 16/06/2024 22:11

Oh don't fall for the they're actually miserable rhetoric. Generally they live absolutely fantastic lives in the lap of luxury. .

The current characters in the charade don't strike me as particularly bright or dynamic. They just plod on with the status quo, as most of us do each day. I think it's unlikely to expect these fairly mediocre people to initiate revolutionary change. Change will only come from UK citizens deciding that the aristocracy has to go. Then we can demand the billions back.

The only ones with any gumption were Harry and Meghan, who did indeed sack it off and are raising their children in private. But I can't see any of those folk on that balcony doing anything so radical or life-affirming..

I would hate to lose my anonymity. The freedom to walk down the street completely anonymously is priceless. I wouldn't want that life for all the tea in china. And I definitely wouldn't want it for my kids.

I have always wondered why society seems to hold some particular people in high regard for literally no valid reason whatsoever.
they are “special” because their ancestors were “special” but quite how or why any of them are special is a total mystery. it’s completely bizarre.
those “royalists” who devour the royal stories and gossip are responsible for the media hounding Diana which resulted in her death. Wasn’t that enough to show our weird obsession for what it is- stalking on a grand scale.
let’s put the property and the wealth into public ownership, give the remaining royals enough to maintain the existing members but no more generations please. It’s horrible to see young children doomed to an inescapable life of scrutiny, likewise abuse on a grand scale.

Have you ever heard of social media?
People trussing themselves and their kids up for show to be gawped at those with nothing else interesting in their lives
We need, as a country, to mature and put the whole culture of 'look at me, me ME!!!!!!!!!!!' behind us...

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 16/06/2024 22:26

I like HRH kate and family and even Charles and his wife, now
The press and they have an understand re privacy.
IMO, the royal family give us something to chat about!!
They also bring millions to London to look at them and the places they
live in etc, etc!!
We are lucky to have them, IMO!!

StripedPiggy · 16/06/2024 22:27

They exist to be gawped at. That is the entire purpose of them.

What they are not, however, is prisoners. If they don’t like it, they can quit. Those born as royals can bugger off to California like the Ginger Whinger. Those who married into it knew what they were getting into, but they can get divorced & get out.

Oh, are you a Royal then?
If not, you seem particularly ill informed, even for for a commoner

Areolaborealis · 16/06/2024 22:27

All they have to do to get the best of everything is stand a look miserable for a photo once in a while.

Nice job if you can get it.

See, I could be swayed to a republic but I also feel every argument against the Monarchy can be applied to celebrity culture too.

If celebrity-dom vanished tomorrow or the exact moment we abolished the monarchy, then count me in.

Have you heard of the English Civil war?
Do you know how badly this country fared during the interregnum?
Why do you think they bought the monarchy back and binned Oliver Cromwell?
The ignorance here is astounding

This. Stalking children no less. What are we as a country, doing this?

Couldn't agree.more. Let's consign it all to history and turn over a new page as a country. Goodness knows it's massively overdue.
