To Be Annoyed She’s Getting Another Pet?

A family member of mine keeps getting pets but she doesn’t look after them properly. AIBU to be irritated?
She currently has two rabbits, two guinea pigs, and a mouse and is now awaiting the arrival of two kittens. There have been many pets in the past that have met an untimely end due to lack of veterinary care. She also has 3 kids and is a single mum.

None of the current animals have ever seen a vet, none of them have adequate housing in my opinion, they all lack general attention and now she’s adding cats into the mix.
It really bothers me and she knows I don’t approve but there’s actually very little I can do isn’t there? 😤

I'm totally with you but not sure what you can do about it.

Is your friend katie price?

AmpleFatball · 12/06/2024 21:54

That poor mouse - very cruel not to have at least a pair 😞

LammasEve · 12/06/2024 21:56

Contact the RSPCA? If she's in a housing association property, let them know?

Not having adequate housing and never seeing a vet are 2 reasons why the RSPCA should be contacted.

If the animals are neglected are the children neglected too?

sparkleowl · 12/06/2024 22:01

Well, the mouse won’t last long with two kittens around.I know someone like this who fills the house with too many pets, doesn’t have much time or money either.Always seems like a mental health prob to me.Nothing I can do or you either.RSPCA only deal in extreme cases.

Makes me very cross when people like this get animals - they are not animal lovers at all ! Poor animals ! Hasn’t she got enough responsibilities with three kids alone!

Agreed and it none of the OP's business unless there are real concerns then a report to the RSPCA is the way forward

Awful, getting pets on a whim and not looking after them is plain neglect and cruelty. I would be having words with her about this. Xx

I know someone like this. Constantly getting puppies or kittens or guinea pigs, posts them all over FB saying how cute and amazing they are, then come the posts moaning about them not being house trained or whatever and then the inevitable "with a heavy heart I'm going to have to re-home" post 🙄

The kittens might be being bred and sold in breach of Lucy's Law and will undoubtedly be unvaccinated and unchipped - the latter also being an offence now. That might be worth reporting.

I know a lady like this. And she is in fact the same with her kids.

She is a very kind person really but consistently makes poor choices about all kinds of things, but most especially men.

I do think there is some sort of underlying personality issue at the root of it.

ThisNoisyTealLurker · 12/06/2024 23:03

My partners ex is like this, brings home animals, often dogs and eventually there’ll be an issue and they’ll need to be re homed. The poor kids get attached and then get told ‘we don’t have time to walk them’, ‘the house is too small’ etc. she’s even brought home a couple of ducklings that she thought didn’t have a mum and they inevitably died within a few days. The woman is a complete moron. I’ve often thought of reporting her but my partner doesn’t want to rock the boat! Luckily she hasn’t done it in a while so may have got something else to occupy her time.

CrowleyKitten · 06/11/2024 03:01

if you love your pets, you make sure their medical, feeding, housing and social needs are met.
if you aren't willing to do that, you shouldn't get them.

foxredlab101 · 06/11/2024 03:05

Just to play devils advocate here Guinea pigs and mice do not routinely need to go to a vet
