How crazy and stupid have people become?

Seriously just that. I just read an article about an actor having to remind people that he played a character in a film, after he was sent threatening dms:

How absolutely terrifying to think that there are people who don’t stop to think for a second but lash out at others. I’m sure this must happen more frequently than I thought, but I’ve never seen this before.
Makes you wonder how many serious nutters are out there in the wild!

I think this is common place.

I remember the Scottish actor who played Trevor in Eastenders got people being aggressive with him in public warning him to ,“lLeave Mo alone”.

HarryPottersScar · 10/06/2024 19:54

People have been stupid about this for ever. I remember reading an interview with Susan Tully in the early 80s when her Eastenders character had an abortion. She went to fill up her car at the petrol station and got a load of abuse from another customer there for having her (fictional) termination.

A relative of mine was on duty for the Queen's funeral. A visitor to London asked him why there were crowds of people lining the roads and he said it was for the Queen's funeral. The visitor replied "Oh, is she dead?" . . . . . 🤔

T1Dmama · 10/06/2024 19:57

Yes it’s scary that these people walk amongst us!…. Even scarier that they breed!!

Foolofafook · 10/06/2024 20:00

Mental

To be fair, if they are a visitor then likely to be on holiday and I know plenty of people who deliberately don’t keep up with the news when they are on leave. Plus for plenty of people it really wasn’t that big a deal, I managed not to see any of the funeral or news footage because I actively avoided it.

I think the point was that you don't have a funeral unless you are dead.

I saw an interview years ago with some famous soap actor from the US who played a doctor. He was talking about how people would come up to him in public asking for medical advice and then get pissed off when he would tell them he wasn't really a physician. And this happened a lot.

Nonspecificcheese · 10/06/2024 20:26

Hell is other people.

The older I get, the better a cottage in the Outer Hebrides sounds.

SpudleyLass · 10/06/2024 20:29

I forget who said it but "Individual people are smart. Groups of people are dumb, panicky animals".

Twas ever thus.

WhatNoRaisins · 10/06/2024 20:33

I think that some people's grasp of reality is a bit tenuous.

ShowerOfShites · 10/06/2024 20:36

I remember in the 1970s some Coronation Street actor (played Mike Baldwin I think), getting battered by a woman's handbag for not treating Deirdre the way he should.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 10/06/2024 20:36

I was truly shocked yesterday by the thread about someone who believes that the earth is flat . . . . .

CaptainOliviaBenson · 10/06/2024 20:49

These people are like real-life versions of Brooke Shields' character, Erica, in Friends. They're completely nuts!

LindorDoubleChoc · 10/06/2024 20:49

There have always been people who have trouble separating fact from fiction. Actors in soaps and popular shows often talk about members of the public speaking to them as though they are in character.

I'll never forget two threads on Mumsnet along similar lines:

  1. someone posted a thread "How come it's snowing on East Enders when I live in East London and it's not snowing here" and
  2. the woman who insisted that Martin Freeman in a TV phone ad was not acting, but was infact sharing an emotional moment from his own life

Ahhhh, gotcha, I didn’t read it like that but that makes sense. Also I’ve just done a seven hour drive so my brain is probably the consistency of blancmange right now!

BizzyOldFule · 10/06/2024 21:35

Understand - 😂 A 7hr drive is enough to frazzle anyone's brain!

That's from Men in Black!

Still true though.

LakeTiticaca · 10/06/2024 22:36

Their brains are mangled by too much junk food, weed and social media.
On a lighter note, there was a huge campaign to free Deidre Barlow "the weatherfield One" when she was jailed after being scammed by the fake pilot. People were outraged and the then Prime Minister Tony Blair even pledged his support 🤣🤣🤣

When we answer the phone at work we say Hello……. (Place of business) and without fail at least 3 or 4 times a day they will reply Hi is that…….. (place of business)
Every single fucking day.
You bloody rang me, who were you expecting to answer?!

Is that at Windsor Castle, where an American tourist famously commented: 'Nice castle. Shame they had to build it so close to the airport though'.

ScottishScouser · 10/06/2024 23:59

This is why I moved from the West Country to the Highlands - fewer idiots.

If they start to infiltrate I will move to the outer Hebrides or shetland!
