AIBU to buy compatible printer toner?

Are compatible toners for laser printers any good? Or will I risk wrecking my printer? The originals are so expensive! I don't buy originals for my inkjet and it's always been fine but for some reason I'd not thought of doing it for the laser until now.

YABU: Stick to the originals, the compatibles are junk
YANBU: Buy the cheap imitation, it's just as good

I have for years - they’re just as good.

If you don't really need colour printing, look at buying a cheap monochrome printer.
Never had any issues with compatible cartridges - if you buy from Amazon, read the product reviews.

I tried that, my printer basically recognised they weren't HP cartridges and wouldn't work so I wasted that money.

If they were sold as compatible, but aren't, return the cartridges that don't work?
