My Mum does this constantly. She has quite a loud voice, and just overtalks other people who are more softly spoken. I deal with it by not looking at her and just concentrate on maintaining eye contact with the person who was speaking first. She doesn't pick up at all that nobody is listening to her, yet she continues on and on seemingly oblivious to how rude she comes across. Today I snapped a bit and just turned to her and said "Mum, just one minute, Clare is talking". I have done this on other occasions but she never seems to take it on board!
DH says I shouldn't address it with her as she isn't going to change (she is 80) and will just cause upset. He's probably right, but I find it so rude and embarrassing. She's not hard of hearing or anything and very much with it in terms of mentally. She's always been this way.
Anyone else have experience of an overtalker and how best to deal?
