Help! DH used laundry tabs in dishwasher

Purplegrapejuicefan · 09/06/2024 18:40

Help! As title says, hubs has been using laundry pods in the dishwasher for a week while I was away with the kids.

Now everything cooked in our non stick pots and pans and air fryer drawers tastes and smells of laundry detergent no matter how many times we wash them and put them through the dishwasher with normal tabs. We’ve cleaned the dishwasher too but it’s literally permeated all our pots and pans.

Has anyone had this and managed to get things back to normal again or are we going to have to replace everything?!?

You put your non stick in the dishwasher??

(Never done it, so can't help you there sorry)

ThinWomansBrain · 09/06/2024 18:41

try soaking in white vinegar - great to get rid of smells.

Or lemon juice or bicarbonate of soda, which absorbs smells.

BMW6 · 09/06/2024 18:46

Bicarbonate of soda (or baking powder) should absorb and neutralise smells.

I'd try making a paste of it with water and rubbing all over the pots inside and out, then leave on overnight.

If that doesn't work I think I'd buy new pots......

Clean the dishwasher and clean the pans with bicarb of soda while you wait for the cycle. Rub them all over with lemon juice and then put them through the clean dishwasher for a boiling hot rinse.

Basically, throw everything at it!

StarlightLady · 09/06/2024 18:50

Honestly! Men! Did he not wonder why they didn’t fit in the dispenser? Try soaking overnight and then running through dish washer on hottest setting with no detergent. Then run again with dishwasher tab. Then spank his bottom 😀!

And yes, l put my non stick pans in the dishwasher too. Life is too short to do otherwise.

crenellations · 09/06/2024 18:51

I assume your DH doesn't do the laundry or the dishwasher on a regular basis.
How on earth did he get it that wrong?! Definitely needs to try a few new skills for himself.... (sorry I know that's no help with your actual problem! )

WhenSunnyGetsBlue · 09/06/2024 18:54

Have you tried putting the pots and pans into the washing machine with a dishwasher tablet? 😉

This will work. White vinegar is fabulous!!

Bananalanacake · 09/06/2024 18:55

Don't go away ever again. Is the only solution ( tongue in cheek),

Run the dishwasher a couple,of times with white vinegar in the detergent compartment, and as others have said, soak pots etc in a strong vinegar solution

kanet · 09/06/2024 18:57

Before using dishwasher again, I’d run it with vinegar a couple of time (cup of it in top rack). Then I’d run it several times empty. IMO it will be still in the dishwasher.

meanwhile clean the affected items in washing up liquid and vinegar. And rinse loads.

peopleonthebusgoupanddown · 09/06/2024 19:01

Wow. Your DH needs to do chores more regularly...

I would run dishwasher on hotter cycle a few times. Maybe even add a cup of bleach? Or get one of those calgon dishwasher cleaner pods.

Meanwhile I'd soak the pans in very hot water with bicarbonate in. Might need to refresh the water and bicarb a few times.

@Purplegrapejuicefan we once left our 17 year old daughter at home while we went on holiday with our son for a week. she managed to get the dog mixer and the pond fish food mixed up! hubby had to empty a 13 foot long fish pond but hey ho, the fish can now bark and our dogs are now fantastic swimmers!!

Purplegrapejuicefan · 10/06/2024 07:34

@allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld 😂

Some great advice, thanks all! The irony is he does most of the laundry and dishwasher stuff (apart from this incident he’s a keeper) but was just pleased with himself that he’d managed to grab these ‘cheap dishwasher tabs’ at the supermarket 🙈🤣

I’s still smack his bottom! 😀

Mindymomo · 10/06/2024 08:06

This is so funny, to be fair I got laundry tabs instead of dishwasher ones, luckily I thought these don’t look right before I used them. Now I keep dishwasher tablets under sink and laundry tablets in a cupboard. Some do look similar now, particularly the multicoloured ones.

BobnLen · 10/06/2024 08:30

Oh dear, did he not notice when he had his meals or a cuppa it was rather scented. You could try a Finish in wash dishwasher cleaner which you put in with the dishes.

MissPoste · 31/05/2025 19:06

Sorry to post on an old thread, but @Purplegrapejuicefan- did you manage to get the laundry smell/taste out?? I’ve had the same incident with my husband. He thought he’d bought dishwasher tablets but they were laundry ones. He did just one wash but everything is contaminated and no matter what we’ve tried in the dishwasher (vinegar, expensive cleaning roots) the smell just won’t come out. We must have spent a fortune on water and electricity so far!

Abitlosttoday · 31/05/2025 19:27

LTB.

RealEagle · 31/05/2025 19:31

My son put fairy liquid in the dishwasher once the whole kitchen was covered in soapy suds. Agree with pp try lemon juice n bicarbonate,if not DH needs to buy new pans..

Hi MissPoste, we tried everything, the vinegar, the bicarb, the only thing that worked was time and lots of washes! Good luck!
