Dry socket

Had a wisdom tooth out this morning and am already panicking like crazy about dry socket, I've been in pain for a long time with this tooth and now it's out (relatively pain free procedure) I'm still worried that it's going to cause me more problems!!! It was stitched as it was horizontal so there's some stitching along my bottom gum. It also looks like they've packed it with something that looks like a white strip but I don't know what that is. They did mention something to help with clotting but I was a bit out of it at that point.

I've read so many horror stories about dry socket, apparently it's the most painful thing ever. I'm following advice - liquid meals, salt water rinses tomorrow when 24 hours have passed, no smoking or alcohol. Is there anything else at all I can possibly do to ensure I don't get this? And if you've had it at what point during recovery did it happen? How did you cope? If I can get past say day 5 will I be in the clear? I'm just so sick of being in pain and worrying about being in pain. I haven't been able to go about normal life for weeks.

My advice is don’t worry about it until it happens. It probably won’t if you follow the instructions given.

i had many (a lot) of teeth out over the years including a wisdom tooth due to damage caused to me as a foetus due to medical treatment my mum had to have when she was pregnant with me.

iv only ever had it once (not with wisdom tooth though) It was absolutely horrible up with the worst pain I’ve experienced. I remember driving my face in to the mattress hoping it would ease and I’m good with pain as it’s a part of my other disabilities! but it’s not massively common as far as the dentist told me. The pain reduced very significantly once I had the packing put in though so if it does happen hopefully at least that’s a comfort!

They splintered mine too. I also had the tooth next to it out too. Did they pack yours with anything? It's hard to know if it's clotting because I can't see beneath the white packing. I'm not sure if this stuff will dissolve or fall out.

If it hasn’t clotted your mouth would be filling with blood. No blood then it has clotted.

@Angrymum22 that makes sense I'm just wondering what will happen when the packing comes out...

I didn’t have dry socket but I thought I did- turns out 6 fragments of tooth broke off and got squashed into the gum. They say these can work their way out painlessly, unfortunately my body decided they were an infection and they had to be cut out. The dentist said I would be uncomfortable after the procedure but I felt better than I had in those three weeks since the wisdom removal (agony) Had the second set of wisdoms out and the recovery was so
much better than the first. I think if they stitch and pack the likelihood of dry socket is much less. Fingers crossed for you 🤞
