DH and I are watching the debate. The moderation is awful! She has zero control. Could they have not got a stronger moderator?

She is terrible
how many times can you use the word “specific”

pinotnow · 04/06/2024 21:41

I'm sick of her saying 'gentlemen' when 95% of the interruptions are Sunak. FFS.

Yes that’s really fucking annoying. She can’t seem to rein in Sunak’s interruptions whatsoever.
I also think she’s had some work done

Best Twitter comment compared it to marriage counselling - 'say that to Rushi/Keir' - very funny

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 04/06/2024 21:53

Roland rat really pissed me off stating that only parents who send their kids private "work hard and have aspirations for their children"

Julie Etchingham was absolutely appalling! She had no control and just kept feebly saying ‘ok’ ’ and ‘thank you’. How many times did she say both those things? Dozens - and it was SO annoying. She was beyond irritating and her incompetence made it impossible for me to concentrate on what the politicians were saying. She was incapable of controlling or guiding the debate at any point.
if I had the authority, I would sack her. How did she even get her good reputation? I fear this interview will ruin that. If not, it should!

Ilikeadrink14 · 05/06/2024 18:57

And why did she keep holding her arm in the air? What a dreadful hash she made of the whole thing!

Meatba115 · 05/06/2024 19:10

Totally agree, we thought that too!She was useless, Sunac was sooo rude and she just let him get away with it.

SnapdragonToadflax · 05/06/2024 19:12

The problem was Sunak talking over her and Starmer - she shouldn't have needed to control the debate to that extent.

But yes, she was a bit ineffectual. I find myself wishing they'd just switch his mic off.

Bignanna · 05/06/2024 19:15

It must be really difficult moderating a debate, trying to be fair to both, alllowing sufficient time etc. In the circumstances I thought she was pretty good.

LlynTegid · 05/06/2024 19:32

Imagine how much more Mr Sunak would have done if it had been Laura Kuennsberg, who never really challenges any Tory.

cherish123 · 05/06/2024 21:24

She was awful.
Kept interrupting

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/06/2024 21:25

Yep, she’s bloody awful.

TheRomanticOutlaw · 05/06/2024 21:37

I recorded it and watched it with 18 year old DS. We both thought she was rubbish, it was so frustrating. She couldn’t reign Sunak in at all, she just let him talk over her & Starmer. Someone mentioned having their mics cut off - we actually have this in the Senedd in Wales. The ‘Llywydd’ ( currently Elin Jones) gets to control who speaks and for how long. If the speaker repeatedly carries talking she can, and does, literally cut them off 🤣
I think it’s great and exactly what these TV debates need. To be honest, they need this in Westminster too!

Me and DH were getting properly annoyed by the arm thing where she would lift it up and down saying ‘gentlemen please’ in a completely ineffectual way.

She reminded me of those parents in our local pub who’s kids are running wild and screaming and every so often the parent lifts their head up from the table inevitably covered in the remnants of snacks brought from home, to say feebly ‘Olivia please stop kicking that poor waitress’ whilst giving an apologetic smile to the other customers who can’t hear themselves think. In other words just useless!

The format was shit too. Why did ITV think you can debate a serious topic in 45 seconds? You need more time to get beyond sound bites and ‘gotcha’s’. It was organised like a game show. If the next one has the same format I’m going to have to swerve.
