Newly qualified GPs now working in Tesco!

This makes me so sad. The state of nhs funding particularly funding to primary care means that newly qualified GPs can't get jobs in the U.K. Sad? No actually I am absolutely furious that the British public are denied decent health care.

Funny that. My mum's GP practice hasn't had a permanent doctor for the last three years because they haven't been able to recruit anyone. Just a series of locums. Wonder how that works.

olympicsrock · 04/06/2024 20:16

Maybe they are offering rubbish terms and conditions. Maybe they work their staff like dogs ?? Maybe the partners are arseholes?

many reasons …

cannonballz · 04/06/2024 20:16

well there are plenty of vacancies, but clearly this ONE individual isn't suited to any of them

OhHelloMiss · 04/06/2024 20:17

It says applied to Tesco.... who knows if they even get the job

Up to them where they apply to work

Octavia64 · 04/06/2024 20:17

It'll be the same as teaching.

Cut the funding so that schools can't afford to hire anyone even though the service is shit.

decionsdecisions62 · 04/06/2024 20:17

8667 jobs for GPs advertised on NHS jobs. I think this is fake news!

It says they are weeks from qualifying, they haven’t yet qualified and they aren’t a GP. I wonder if their training record isn’t excellent and that’s why they are seeking work outside of the service. Primary care is crying out for good GPs, so fairly odd that this person cannot find a role within the service.

It doesn't say that though does it? It says GP jobs have evaporated. I work in Primary care and find this incredibly hard to believe.

CremeEggThief · 04/06/2024 20:21

If it's their own choice to decide to work in Tesco, that's their decision.
No need for you to get furious about it OP!

Are you also furious at people like me who managed to get a bursary twice for 2 attempts at teacher training and didn't pay any tuition fees both times and decided not to go into full-time teaching? It's absolutely none of your business. YABU.

MidnightPatrol · 04/06/2024 20:21

Can you provide the full text of the article, as it is difficult to understand the precise scenario from a headline alone.

Given they are a registrar, I assume it is some issue related with training…?

titchy · 04/06/2024 20:22

Yeah it's bollocks. They could locum if they couldn't find a perm. There'll be a reason - maybe theres an upcoming GMC hearing... Although that wouldn't make as good a story.

OhHelloMiss · 04/06/2024 20:23

Anyway....what's wrong with a job in Tesco?

NoTouch · 04/06/2024 20:26

There are literally thousands of vacancies advertised for GPs.

One trainee GP is applying to Tesco with no further information (that I can see) - surely, if true, it must be that their search criteria is very narrow. If it was an issue Drs couldn't get jobs it would be in the national news.

Absolutely nothing wrong with it, but if there is a shortage of doctors appointments, trained GPs should be doing that

Thelastbitofketchup · 04/06/2024 20:28

Is there a strike coming 🙄

Exactly, you could never guess there was an election just around the corner could you 🙄😆

gamerchick · 04/06/2024 20:30

Has to get hired first. Tesco hiring is batshit.

Taciturn · 04/06/2024 20:32

This definitely is a "thing". There was a parliamentary petition posted on here a month or so agi and it was along the lines of billions in funds to surgeries but not being made available to hire GPs - which is why physician assistants are being hired instead.

It was posted by an out of work GP. It was a real eye opened as I thought it was a shortage of doctors rather than administrative decisions causing the shortage of appointments

I would have thought they’d be in demand too

Nothingoriginalhere · 04/06/2024 20:38

The surgery I work at is losing tens of thousands every month even though we are a large multi site practice. We can’t afford new bp machines never mind new staff.

Notsonifty50 · 04/06/2024 20:45

I don't believe this. My GP was telling me that they have been trying to recruit a new GP for months and haven't succeeded.

Piggletta · 04/06/2024 20:46

There are not thousands of GP jobs available. I've just searched on BMJ careers and filtered by role 'Gp' and location 'uk' and found 86! A lot of these were for private providers or only 1 or 2 sessions.

LettuceTruss · 04/06/2024 20:47

My cousin’s a junior doctor. She couldn’t stand the hours and the stress. She now drives trains. More money and regular hours/shifts. She’s much happier.

Reugny · 04/06/2024 20:51

Yes it is definitely a thing as @Taciturn says.

I was listening to a radio show and a BMA representative who is a locum GP came on. He was doing 60 hours a month and now only gets 16 as there is no money to hire GPs or use GP locums. He wasn't so bothered about them not according to use locums but more of the fact GPs cannot be hired to a salaried position due to lack of funding.
