There is some stink and the waves are bringing up foamy substance.

Does anyone know what’s happening? How can the sea become polluted?

soupfiend · 02/06/2024 21:41

Probably just seaweed coming in. Warmer weather means it multiplies and comes in land and is washed up

If you live near the coast this is quite common.

Whitesky75 · 02/06/2024 21:43

Not sea weed, it was clear white thick foam.

Do you live near the sea OP?

The sea is often foamy at certain times of the year, seaweed, warmth, growth of things, its normal

Unless its sewage of course. Then its not normal.

cardibach · 02/06/2024 21:51

What do you mean how can the sea be polluted? Have Surfers against Sewage and all the stuff about the water companies passed you by? Not saying that’s what this is, you do often get foam in beaches if it’s windy, but you can’t honestly think the sea can’t be polluted? Surely?

Lonelycrab · 02/06/2024 21:54

And the smell

Nope, no siree, there can’t possibly be a smell because our waters are just as clean as they were under the last Labour govt. There can’t be any link to our now abysmal sea and river water quality that has been enabled and voted for by our government, and the foul stench that you’re encountering.

You must be imagining it.

parietal · 02/06/2024 21:58

The whole of the south coast has sewage pollution because the water companies aren't treating the water properly.

Wash your hands extra well !

FrogandTrumpet · 02/06/2024 22:00

I don’t really get your confusion about the sea being polluted.

It can be polluted by us pumping all manner of waste, human and otherwise, oil, chemicals, plastic, general litter.

Why do you think the sea can’t be polluted?

NB - I’m not saying this pollution. I thought sea foam was a thing?

To be fair, it is often sewage! I usually check the ‘surfers against sewage’ live map of sewage dumps. It’ll tell you if that stretch of beach is ok

There have been a few pollution warnings on Kent beaches in the last few weeks. Have a google or check KentOnline.

Teamarugula · 02/06/2024 22:04

Of course the sea can be polluted! The air and the soil are polluted too, there’s nothing on earth humans haven’t spoiled.

Um....numerous ways.

JamMakingWannaBe · 03/06/2024 00:37

I've recently watched an old David Attenborough Blue Planet episode and the coastal waters turned white and foamy due to absolutely vast quantities of salmon sperm during mating season.🤮
