To think a comfortable sofa bed doesn't exist?

Flowersforalgernon1 · 02/06/2024 21:30

We live in a small 3 bed and all bedrooms are occupied so when we have guests we have limited space to host.
I bought a very expensive sofa bed from a reputable department store that is super uncomfortable as a sofa and need to find a new one. I feel gutted as it's such a waste of money for a useless expensive product!
I've done a lot of research but AIBU to think it's going to be near on impossible to find a sofa bed that's both comfy as a bed and a sofa?
I'm now looking at the Emma sofa bed.
Any recommendations for an everyday couch and a bed that would need to be for older generations to also sleep on?

Which sofa bed did you buy?
Is it only uncomfortable as a sofa, or is it uncomfortable as a bed too?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 02/06/2024 21:33

My friend has an amazing sofa bed. She bought it about 15 years ago. It's really comfortable as a sofa and as a bed. I slept on it last weekend and it's still great.

She spent a lot of money on it - about £3000 I think. Worth every penny.

I used to have the ikea Karlstad sofa/sofa bed and it was so comfortable. I don’t think they make it anymore though.

Nospecialcharactersplease · 02/06/2024 21:35

Get something that is comfortable as a sofa (we have one from sofas and stuff which is good for this). When it’s a bed, add a panda topper.

Wish44 · 02/06/2024 21:36

Futon company with a mattress topper.

DiddyEckerslike · 02/06/2024 21:36

What is your budget?

We have a Swyft sofa bed and it’s very comfortable as a bed (that was my main criterion for buying it) It’s in our office/study so not used every day as a sofa but the teenagers do not complain when they use it, and I’m quite happy lounging on it to read

Flowersforalgernon1 · 02/06/2024 21:36

It's a corner sofa bed from JL that cost over £2k. Its a pull out sofa bed and the bed is reasonably comfy. The cushions have compressed on the sofa and I actually have a bad hip from it (laberal tear) and JL are washing their hands of it after replacing the cushions it's not resolved the issue.
Don't want my fingers burnt again and now living with hip pain because of the horrible sofa bed. I would love to get a fold away bed and normal sofa but we just don't have the space to store a fold away bed.

I am willing to pay more if I can get a decent 0% interet finance option on it and I know the product is good. It's going to be used as our daily sofa so needs to be comfy.

I second the Swyft sofa bed. We use the sofa daily as it's in the living room and it converts into a very comfy double bed - guests have never complained.

HappyHedgehog247 · 02/06/2024 21:38

IKEA Farlov is the best sofa bed I have ever slept on

OneTC · 02/06/2024 21:40

Depends if you like hard beds or not. My mate had an IKEA one I preferred to my own bed but it was like sleeping on a board

x2boys · 02/06/2024 21:43

I sleep on a sofa bed no they are not that comfortable but I have a mattress topper to make it more comfortable mine cost about £1000 because that was what I could afford I guess like everything ĺf you can afford a more deluxe model they will be more comfortable.

User364837 · 02/06/2024 21:44

I think you’re right that it’s really hard to get one that functions well as both,

if it’s your main living room sofa you want one that errs towards being comfy as a sofa and not tooo bad as an occasional bed and you can add a topper as a PP said

I’d be interested in any ideas too as soon will need to make my living room double as occasional guest room and will need main sofa to be very occasional sofa bed.
also mine is so occasional I’m wondering if I should have another solution like a bed height blow up one or something.

We recently moved house and I was looking for a bed which could be a sofa when you wanted it, rather than the other way around. I found this site:

https://cocoonsleeping.com/collections/double-sofa-beds

and because it's not too far from us, we went and tried them out. The beds were REALLY comfortable, to the degree that even with a serious back issue, I could sleep on one full time, and just fold it away if we had guests and needed more seating. Highly recommend.

I spent over £2k on a deluxe model from JL, the bed has a proper mattress and everything but the sofa is awful... I just want recommendations so I can find a sofa that isn't expensive and is also comfy...

don't buy habitat seattle sofa bed it's awful. metal frame cuts into you, does not attach properly and cushions have sagged. uncomfortable as sofa and bed

PartyOFive · 28/12/2024 21:47

What kind of sofa do you like? We have a swyft sofa bed which is our main everyday sofa, DH and I find it really comfy but it's quite firm, if you like a squashier sofa it wouldn't be for you. It does work nicely as a bed as well, I've slept on t for a week while we gave our bed to relatives with a young child who also had that room.

Crispyturtle · 28/12/2024 21:47

We have an IKEA hagalund, they don’t make them anymore unfortunately but you can pick them up second hand. They are really comfortable both as a sofa and a bed, we have one in our girls room for sitting on to read stories and I love it.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/12/2024 21:48

What's wrong with it as a sofa? Too firm, cushions saggy?

Are there other solutions like those luxury airbeds? Could you upgrade a kids bed and move them around when there are guests.

Wish44 · 02/06/2024 21:36

Futon company with a mattress topper.

I agree - and if you like a firm bed it’s fine without the mattress topper.

Ringpeace · 28/12/2024 22:10

The John Lewis Linear makes and excellent bed and a very decent sofa.

Ashara · 28/12/2024 22:12

Cocoon without a doubt, we used one every day for 3 years with a mattress topper

buttonousmaximous · 28/12/2024 22:22

We got a futon from the futon company. Very comfortable.

fridayposey · 28/12/2024 22:47

How about getting a really good double height air bed? And then you can have a decent comfy sofa and a nice comfortable bed for guests too!

Wallawallakoala · 28/12/2024 22:49

I’d really steer clear of Emma, we have had a terrible experience.
