To think AI is dangerous af and this is why...

Bit of a click bait title sorry. I find AI so, so disturbing - especially after watching The Capture but recently I have used things like Chat GPT for a holiday itinerary etc. What has made me sick to my core is that it is enabling so much abuse. I have just stumbled across the most disturbing tik tok sharing an article about men who have set up a group on Reddit to boast about abusing their virtual girlfriends. For example one selected that his virtual friend was a romantic partner and proceeded to call her a worthless whore, tell her he had pulled her hair and hit her then he would beg her for forgiveness. There's loads of users and they all get off on it. I'm properly upset by it but technically they're doing nothing illegal are they? I work in Domestic Abuse and I find this terrifying. I also don't believe for a second that with the amount of followers and posters in this group they're all single losers in a dingy basement somewhere, I bet there's a few fantasising who have real life partners. I know technically the problem isn't AI it's men but I feel like AI is enabling this weird fantasy stuff to go on. Is anyone else terrified of it?

It's not a danger that I was previously aware of, but I agree with you. I guess it's a bit like pornography - some men will develop violent fantasies that they'll then act out in real life.

Of course big tech companies will work on stopping this sort of abuse once they're aware of it, but there's no feasible way to prevent people doing this with open source models.

There's worse than that out there now. AI can and is being used by some people to create child sexual abuse videos.

I find it terrifying but not for the same reasons. The talk of it ending work as we know it is what scares me. No one seems to have realised that this means it will also end social mobility.

I think the era of human intelligence having economic value is slowly coming to an end. But social mobility will still be possible through sporting or artistic prowess, or by being an influencer or some sort.

The positive though is that we will in aggregate be much richer that today. Or course figuring out how to fairly allocate that wealth may not be easy.

Social mobility hit the floor a long time ago
in 🇬🇧.

I don't know. Sadists can pretend to torture dolls, but that doesn't make dolls bad? Is this significantly different??

saltinesandcoffeecups · 08/06/2024 00:11

Well AI is basically a tool designed and fed by humans so really the blame here is displaced. Unless you think a pen and paper… online blog… or any other form of communication is just as dangerous.

Humans are depraved and will find a way to pervert anything. It’s like the old saying… guns don’t kill people…other people kill people.

ItsNotAShopItsAStore · 08/06/2024 00:13

Whilst that’s awful, you can’t stop progress just because some people do bad things. The possibilities of AI are off the scale - we are talking making people healthier, cutting back waiting lists, solving problems quicker to make life better for people. We can’t stop that because perverts exist

AI certainly has its dangers, and I think it should be far more regulated than it is. But, in this scenario the problem isn't AI, it's men!

ClaustrophobicKipper · 08/06/2024 00:28

I do wonder if the Internet will soon become useless to the average human. I feel like AI is already helping in saturating the Internet with poor quality videos, photos and false information (usually in the name of making a quick buck for the creator)

AI will do alot of humans some good but same as with all technology it will take away more human jobs, and further widen the gap between the super rich and us norms.

That said, I do enjoy playing around with it, the filters, the creating cool images etc

Hagbard · 08/06/2024 01:19

Did you read the article about the roboticised sex doll? On its first demonstration (at a perverts sex convention I think) the revellers practically pulled it to bits with their bare hands.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 08/06/2024 01:23

The virtual girlfriend thing is very dystopian for sure.

Exactly this. It isn't the technology.
It's men.

Social mobility - at least in the UK - died when Labour abolished State Grammar Schools.

Bright working class kids were fucked from then on.
