To ask when you’ve read books do you keep or sell them

Dancefloor999 · 31/05/2024 21:17

I tend to sell on

OP posts:
Soubriquet · 31/05/2024 21:18

Nope. I keep them unless I know I will never read them again because I didn’t enjoy it.

Does mean I have a bit of a book hoarding situation but I can’t let them go

thaisweetchill · 31/05/2024 21:18

I often give them to friends or donate to a charity shop

sophi1995 · 31/05/2024 21:19

I pass them on to friends or family usually. Or else there's a pub in my city that has a "take a book, leave a book" shelf so some end up there.

MereDintofPandiculation · 31/05/2024 21:19

Keep them as if a book is any good it’ll stand being read more than once.

If I really didn’t like it, then charity. How much do you get selling on?

JustPleachy · 31/05/2024 21:20

Do you actually manage to sell them? I find books are like CDs and DVDs these days - no inherent value. I either keep or leave in the phone box community “library”.

Hazey19 · 31/05/2024 21:21

Keep if I think I’ll read again but mostly pass on to friends/family or the charity shop.

Ohhhhhnono · 31/05/2024 21:21

Give them away unless I want to keep for sentimental reasons, if it’s a classic/collectable/part of a series. Need to make room for other books!

SausageRoll2020 · 31/05/2024 21:21

The vast majority are kept, like a dragon hoards gold 🐉

lazyarse123 · 31/05/2024 21:22

I give them away on free sites when I get to about 10. But they are usually the ones that I only pay £1 for. If I ever get hardbacks I tend to keep those as they are normally presents that I've asked for.

cariadlet · 31/05/2024 21:22

I used to keep every book that I had read unless I really hated it.

I'm downsizing so am trying to only keep my absolute favourites and am gradually taking the rest to charity shops.

Lenoftheglen · 31/05/2024 21:22

Used to donate. Then I got a kindle. Rate read I am much better off.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 31/05/2024 21:23

I keep many but as I'm out of space really most of them do go to charity

Thepeopleversuswork · 31/05/2024 21:25

Keep most of them. I tend to reread about half of them and I like to live with books around me for a variety of reasons, even if I don’t plan to read them.

The ones I really can’t be arsed with I give to charity unless I know someone who I think will want them in which case I donate to them.

Spikyplant · 31/05/2024 21:29

I've bought and sold quite a few books on vinted and ebay. If it doesn't sell on there after a few weeks I take them to the charity shop.

km21 · 31/05/2024 21:38

I donate them to my local library. I’m a great user of the library myself and it feels like giving something back

haddockfortea · 31/05/2024 21:40

Depends whether I really liked it and think I will read it again. If not, they go back to the charity shop whence they came.

CheshireCat1 · 31/05/2024 21:40

I keep special books and give the others to a charity shop or friends/ family.

Alltheprettyseahorses · 31/05/2024 21:40

I keep a lot, I put some on book swap shelves or leave them in bus shelters. The rest I throw away which I know will horrify mumsnetters who simply must treasure every book in the world no matter how crap it is (I have a list of books that were so bad I feel personally insulted by their publication), but as a constant reader I don't feel the need to worship them, they're just everyday items.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 31/05/2024 21:43

Keep. Unless I dislike it.

Mum2jenny · 31/05/2024 21:44

Absolutely love books, must have over 5000 including the ones my dp has

SilverBirch99 · 31/05/2024 21:46

Keep non fiction but take fiction to charity shops or give to friends .

goingdownfighting · 31/05/2024 21:46

Straight to the charity shop. I buy mine from there too

FrogandTrumpet · 31/05/2024 21:47

Keep, and put on shelves behind me on Teams calls.

I really, really want to know what your most hated titles are.

I mostly read on Kindle or get ebooks from the library these days, but I do occasional culls of the physical books, giving ones I’m definitely never going to read again, or which don’t have any sentimental value, to the charity shop.

Jakadaal · 31/05/2024 22:08

I pass them on to a friend who then passes them on to one of her friends. I fell it's like passing on a gift especially if it's a book I really loved. However I love thrillers/serial killers and am aware that it's a specific genre 😀 I also have a kindle and wish there was a way I could pass them on too
