She’s made a number of attempts on her life she usually reaches out to me and tells me her plans and I report them to police. People have said she doesn’t want to go through with it as she tells her plans. Aibu to think whatever the reason she’s clearly unwell and in need?

You are right. People still die from so-called 'cry for help' attempts. You are doing the right thing. I really wish we had better me talking health support. Most people only get help when in crisis.

I can't remember the exact statistics but I believe the vast majority of people who successfully take their own lives tell people in advance that they want to.

It's completely incorrect and quite outdated thinking to claim that if someone really wants to do it they won't talk about it.

YANBU and I hope your friend finds help.

I just read research that said that up to10% of people with BPD die by suicide which is just an awful statistic. I have read before though that there is (or has been in years past) a perception that people with BPD are just attention seeking and don't go through with it - even amongst professionals. Maybe because there are often a number of attempts or cries for help first.

You sound like a great friend OP but make sure you look after your MH too, it must be very difficult and distressing to have such an ill friend.

Of course she is unwell and needs help. But, that doesn't mean hospital is the right place. So it depends what help you and she are expecting. Does she have support from a community team?

Will she contact MH support services? A lot of people just don’t understand suicidal ideation, it’s a lack of knowledge more than anything.
