To think you can get accidentally pregnant at 40?

I am 40 and on the mini pill Noriday. I know it can stop periods, however in the past I have had light bleeding at the time where I would normally get my cycle.

Last month I had gastro and didn't think too much about taking extra protections in the week following. Only had sex once, and assumed that with my age it wouldn't matter.

Now my "period" is 5 days late though. I am abroad in a place where I can't easily access a test and I won't be able to until next week. Do you think it's a realistic possibility that I might be pregnant? I read that only 2% of women actively trying to conceive are successful at this age, surely I can't be?

You absolutely could be pregnant, even if the risk is small.

Cyclebabble · 28/05/2024 16:21

Yes OP I think you know it is. I was not necessarily actively trying but was not using contraceptives and feel pregnant at 42. Turned out really well for me, but yes of course you can pregnant in your early 40s.

Peonies12 · 28/05/2024 16:23

You definitely can. Less likely but very possible

MatildaTheCat · 28/05/2024 16:23

I believe that the highest group of women accessing termination for accidental pregnancy is those in their 40s.

Take a test as soon as possible and then you can either feel reassured or consider your options.

Best wishes.

I got accidentally pregnant at 41 and 43! I then get sterilised just in case!!

Merryoldgoat · 28/05/2024 16:25

Of course. I got pregnant at 39 with zero effort and I’m very fat with PCOS.

Although ‘planned’ it was basically one go and pregnant.

Thepeopleversuswork · 28/05/2024 16:25

I got accidentally pregnant at 39. A few weeks after having my coil removed and using condoms (though sometimes not very rigorously).

MissDianaBarry · 28/05/2024 16:25

Yes me at 43. After an IVF baby at 41. Was warned by the Midwife that it could happen but didn't listen.

TheKeatingFive · 28/05/2024 16:26

Of course. I know someone who got accidentally pregnant at 48. Admittedly that's unusual.

DyslexicPoster · 28/05/2024 16:26

For some it's incredibly easy to get pg at 40. I was half arsed trying at 39 and got pg the second month.

VolvoFan · 28/05/2024 16:27

As long as you're still ovulating, you can get pregnant.

Nap1983 · 28/05/2024 16:28

100% you can! My 40 yr old friend is expecting her wee surprise soon!!

AmusedMaker · 28/05/2024 16:29

I’m sure half of mumsnet have had babies in their 40’s. ( if the threads on here about late motherhood are anything to go by )

Restaurantcritic · 28/05/2024 16:29

Yep. My SIL got accidentally pregnant at 47. The accident is now a strapping teen!

I had a termination at 41 and this was what the nurse told me too. Definitely a possibility! Tbh I'm 51 now and still use contraception as I'm not totally through the menopause and still get the herbie jeebies about getting accidentally pregnant again

ZiggyZowie · 28/05/2024 16:31

I got "accidentally" pregnant at 40

And again at 42. 😂😭 !!

ThereAreNoSloesOnThere · 28/05/2024 16:32

best to check as soon as realistically possible.

I had a scare a few months ago. I'm 51. But not yet in menopause and have become a bit complacent about contraception. It was okay in the end but a bit worrying.

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 28/05/2024 16:32

well if you are having sex, accidentally fall on a toilet seat, go swimming or own a hot tub you certainly can be pregnant. might add super religious and accept visitations by divine entities.

isthismylifenow · 28/05/2024 16:32

Yes you can, you will only stop being fertile when your ovaries no longer produce eggs.

I'm an aunty to a baby boy, he was conceived when his mum was 44. 45 when he was born.

Phantasmagorically · 28/05/2024 16:33

uh, yeah you can...

KreedKafer · 28/05/2024 16:33

I don't understand why you think it wouldn't be possible.

Take a test as soon as you get back from your holiday.

I'm on the mini pill and in my experience, if you miss one or have them disrupted by sickness or diarrhoea, you actually get more bleeding, not less.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 28/05/2024 16:34

Definitely could be pregnant. My godmother’s unplanned baby at 40 is just about to turn 18. Her DH had a vasectomy not long after finding out she was pregnant.

ZiggyZowie · 28/05/2024 16:34

And I might add I wasn't taking precautions because my earlier pregnancies were assisted by Pergonal and Clomiphene due to having g PCOS and fertility problems

allthingsred · 28/05/2024 16:36

Can absolutly happen. My 1 yo proof of that!

Puppalicious · 28/05/2024 16:37

I had sex for only the second time in 3.5 years a couple of months off my 40th birthday, my little surprise born 9 months later. When I had been trying to conceive at 32 and 36, it took many months and several miscarriages.
