To complain to the gardener.

We have a gardener who comes every fortnight for 4 hours.

I've always been quite happy with his work. He's always had a tendancy to enjoy chatting, and it's hard to get away to let him work sometimes. He has told me that lots of his clients are elderly and just want someone to talk to. I've seen him sitting down on the phone for 20 minutes in the past and he always takes a short break which I pay him for.

Last week we were out all the time he was here, which has not really happened much in the 3 years he's been coming. He weeded one bed which is full of plants but had some general weeds in it and a small 2 foot by 2 foot patch of couch grass. He says this took 4 hours and has invoiced me for £80. I think it would have taken me an hour to do what he did. I left him a list of 4 jobs none of it was even started.

I don't want to lose him as I can't cope with the garden, but I really think he was taking the piss because I wasn't here. Should I say something and if so, what shall I say? My partner says let it go. Thanks

Maybe ask him ‘is our garden getting too much for you?’ and see what he says. If he asks why you are asking, just tell him he doesn’t seem to be getting much done and you can’t afford to pay him and have to do the jobs yourself.
