Hi All, my smoke alarm detector keeps beeping occasionally and DH says he'll get round to replacing it tomorrow but it was really annoying me so I just sorta hit it once with a broom (Its up high and I'm only 5' 4") and now its stopped beeping. Husband has yelled at me for it saying that it could be dangerous or something but I heard it can happen because the batteries are going flat and told him its nothing to worry about, but he says it shoudnt be beeping so rapidly. I don't want to call an engineer so AIBU for just leaving it alone

How old is it? They do expire.

Don't ignore it. Is it mains wired or battery. If battery can you replace them tonight. Do you have solid fuel heating or a boiler. Are they serviced. At the very least get really good ventilation through your bedroom. I mean a full cross gale windows open ventilation.
Then replace battery in morning or if still bleeping after that then get someone in.

ClareBlue · 27/05/2024 00:43

And have the services done by qualified person. Have you any symptoms like tiredness, sleepy etc when in certain rooms. It can build up in your system over time and you won't smell it.

Needanewname42 · 27/05/2024 00:49

Change the battery. See if that sorts it before you call someone out.

LordSnot · 27/05/2024 00:49

So your carbon monoxide (?) alarm is going off frequently and your concern is that the sound is annoying?

rainbowunicorn · 27/05/2024 00:50

Is it the carbon monoxide detector ir the smoke alarm? You mentioned both.

ByCupidStunt · 27/05/2024 00:53

It's a low battery alarm. If you open it up and take the old batteries out it will stop. Don't forget to put new ones in.

ByCupidStunt · 27/05/2024 00:55

Oh sorry is it the smoke alarm or the carbon monoxide alarm?

My advice above was for a smoke alarm. If it's a carbon monoxide alarm then I think you've got a serious problem and I'd be opening all the windows in the house while you faff around deciding what to do.

OhcantthInkofaname · 27/05/2024 01:32

If you're not gonna replace the battery at least open a window. If it's carbon monoxide you may not wake up tomorrow.

BruFord · 27/05/2024 01:59

When ours beeps, the battery needs changing.

Gingerkittykat · 27/05/2024 03:38

If it is randomly chirping it is the battery. If it is a continuous noise then it is detecting CO.

If it is a self enclosed unit like mine where you can't change the battery then you need to get a new detector tomorrow, the battery should last more than 6 months.

No

The odd random beep is likely to be the low battery warning. Remove the battery and replace it with a new one as quickly as you can.

For some reason ours always decide to start doing this at about 2am!! 😠

No

No to what??

I wouldn't just hit either a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm, they are there to save your life.
