Off work sick Thursday and Friday, out Saturday night AIBU?

I was off work with a vomiting bug Thursday and Friday. I was sick all Wednesday night and Thursday morning and was told by my line manager I needed to stay off for 48 hours, so Thursday and Friday. This left us really short at work on Friday but I felt really poorly and exhausted.

I felt much better Saturday after resting for 2 full days and hadn't been sick since Thursday morning so attended a friends wedding night do on Saturday evening for a few hours. I didn't drink and didn't stay out late as I was still feeling quite tired but a few photos have been put on social media.

I am worried how this looks and what my manager will say on Tuesday when I return to work, if he's seen the photos. I have untagged myself but was I reasonable to attend the wedding night do?

Why does your manager have access to your social media? Why would these photos be seen?

to me it would be fine unless you also call in sick on Monday which would look a bit suspicious

Starlightstarbright3 · 26/05/2024 12:00

Where I work 48 hours is not required but sounds like in yours it is so you had no choice but not to go .

we have someone off for a week with a sickness bug - they are been talked about

SkateboardingDog · 26/05/2024 12:01

It’s fine. You were ill, stayed off for the recommended time and then went back to normal.

Beezknees · 26/05/2024 12:02

It's fine, don't worry about it.

This^
it would be strange but otherwise 48 period was bound to end at some point so going somewhere on Saturday was normal. You can always tell the truth if you are going to chat about the wedding (not that you have to ) - that you didn’t stay long and didn’t drink at all.

KreedKafer · 26/05/2024 12:06

Your line manager told you to stay away for 48 hours because you might have been infectious, not because they thought you were at death’s door. What you did on Saturday is none of their business. You’re overthinking this.

TheForgetfulCat · 26/05/2024 12:07

Of course not. You had a vomiting bug which needs 48 hours off whether you are well or not, otherwise you risk infecting the whole team which your manager wouldn’t thank you for!
if the 48 hours had been up in the middle of the week you’d have gone back to work, as it was you went to a social event over the weekend and will be back to work Monday. No problem at all.

ilovesooty · 26/05/2024 12:08

No problem. You'll be back at work on Tuesday.

Why? You know not all sickness bugs are the same, right? Some stomach bugs could easily have someone laid up for a week.

YellowHairband · 26/05/2024 12:10

Your manager told you to stay off on Friday.

Even if he hadn't, I think it's very possible to be too ill to work one day, but able to go to a wedding reception for a few hours the following evening.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/05/2024 12:11

Your boss shouldn’t be able to see social media photos of you and SIL had this same vomiting bug and got over it in similar time frame.

I wouldn’t worry as you were sick and then better, it happens especially with vomiting bugs.

Agreed here. For me Norovirus I was off 3 days, but felt bloody awful after it (but bastard boss insisted I return) because I’d been continuously sick and diarrhoea (but vomiting almost all the time 3 days solid).

Mochudubh · 26/05/2024 12:15

When you fill in your self-cert put your Fit for Work date as Saturday and you'll be fine.

fieldsofbutterflies · 26/05/2024 12:17

You were fine to attend but this is why you don't have your manager on your social media Grin

BlueMum16 · 26/05/2024 12:18

You've stayed off as advised and also whilst you felt ill.

Another question would be why are you friends with your manager on social media?

karottybagel · 26/05/2024 12:26

Your line manager told you to stay away for 48 hours not that you had to be ill for 48 hours. As long as you're in for monday/your next shift I see no problem with this

What do you mean "they are being talked about" in a "oh gosh poor thing I'll for a week!" Kind fo way I hope.

They are the person in the workplace who is always sick . You can see them setting themselves off for a period of time off . Not convinced they have ever done a full month .

maw1681 · 26/05/2024 14:41

I wouldn't worry about it, it's a long time from Friday morning to Saturday night, and staying off work Friday isn't just about how you were feeling it's to stop you spreading it to other people.
They would only have reason to complain if you were off sick on Monday! (or Tuesday due to BH)
