To ask those with coloured hair - do you straighten it?

Went to a new hairdresser this week and got highlights for the first time. To my horror, at the end of my appointment, the stylist tells me I must completely refrain from using straighteners as it’ll totally damage my hair and make the bleach go yellow. I have incredibly wild hair (wavy but in a very rogue and unflattering way) and pretty much have no option but to straighten my hair if I’m going out in public. Surely I can’t be alone here? The stylist looked horrified when I mentioned that I straightened it most days! To those with coloured hair, do you straighten it have you managed to keep it healthy?

I've been dying my hair for 35 years and straightening it for about 15.

It's absolutely fine and in fairly good condition considering I'm menopausal with an underactive thyroid.

Gollumm · 23/05/2024 00:26

I mean it's not great for your hair to straighten it every day but people do. Use a purple shampoo to keep the highlights from turning yellow, and use a heat protection product before drying.

JaceLancs · 23/05/2024 00:33

I have my hair coloured by salon - roots every 6 weeks - pull through every 3-4 months and a full head colour once a year
Never straighten - I embraced curly hair regime 10 years ago and am so much happier

Jeschara · 23/05/2024 00:39

Yes I straighten and have blond highlights. I have no problem.

CulturalNomad · 23/05/2024 00:40

Bleached hair is pretty fragile so using a flat iron every day will probably cause some damage. Like a previous poster said, use a good heat protection product before styling and try not to use the highest heat setting.

Hairdressers always act horrified when clients say they use heat styling every day (even though most of them do it themselves)!

HollaHolla · 23/05/2024 00:41

I've got wildly uncontrollable wavy/curly hair, and it's bleached/highlights. I either plait it damp, and let it have a slightly more controlled curl/wave, or I straighten it. I only wash it 2-3 times a week, and do a proper blow dry & straighten 1-2 of those times. I just top it up with a quick run over again, on the in between days. I've been dying my hair in some capacity for 30 years. I'm not bald.

JLT24 · 23/05/2024 00:42

Yes I have a full head of bleached highlights and straighten my hair every other day. I will only use a hairdresser that uses Olaplex with the colour though as it stops any damage from bleach.
I also use a hair mask instead of conditioner
and I use a good heat protection spray before straightening.

5degreestonight · 23/05/2024 00:48

Sorry she’s talking rubbish. You likely have a toner on your hair and heat is going to fade the toner quicker (it’s still going to fade regardless). And once the toner is gone you’ll see what the raw bleach looks - which could be yellow, depends how you lifted.

Pepsiisbetterthancoke · 23/05/2024 01:22

Have straightened my hair for as long as I have coloured and no issue

I always get an Olaplex treatment when I am getting my hair coloured and use Olaplex 4 and 5 at home. Definitely seen a difference in the strength of my hair since using Olaplex

I also get a keratin treatment every six months which makes my hair much less prone to frizz and means that while I still use straighteners, I use them for less time to get the same results

SoftPuppyBlanket · 23/05/2024 05:59

Last time I had my very dark brown hair bleached almost blonde my hairdresser blow dried and straightened it for me!
Is it ideal? Probably not! But neither will it result in disaster 😂

Idontjetwashthefucker · 23/05/2024 06:29

I have highlights and colour for years and have always used straighteners! According to my hairdressers it's in really good condition, despite rarely using heat protection spray

KimberleyClark · 23/05/2024 06:33

I do straighten mine but not every day. I only wash my hair once a week and straighteners at most twice a week.

Furrylittlesweetpotatoes · 23/05/2024 06:36

Uncontrollable wavy coloured hair here, I found curl creams to be amazing for a change and a safer route than straightening.

Although I know plenty of hair coloured blondes who straighten their hair, just use a heat protector and treatments.

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 23/05/2024 07:11

I'd be looking for a hairdresser that isn't full of shit.

Just look after it in other ways. I wash my hair every day and sleep with it soaked in argon oil. I use the purple tresemme shampoo which is repair and seems to work really well with my hair, it's never been so soft.

I blow dry it straight ish on cold (second heat setting of three if in a rush) and then just finish it off with the straighteners if required.

Condition it well and sit for ten mins a few times a week
Use heat protection
Argon oil
Low heat for blow dry

CommeUneVacheEspagnole · 23/05/2024 07:13

Ps I've bleached for around 20 years, dyed orange trying to be blonde for the 5 before that and straightened for as long back when they had to be heated up for 15 mins and could also crimp. Sometimes we used the iron. Still have a full head of hair that's healthy.

Scottishshortbread11877 · 23/05/2024 07:35

Section it and Blow dry it straight?

SamW98 · 23/05/2024 07:41

I’ve coloured my hair since I was 13 and I’m now 55. I wash my hair and use Dyson straighteners every day and my hair is absolutely fine.

Your hairdresser is being overly dramatic

ladybirdsanchez · 23/05/2024 07:44

I've been bleaching/highlighting my hair since my teens (now 50) and no, if I do anything other than colour it my hair gets very dry, very brittle and breaks/falls out. I can't use straighteners or have a Brazilian blow dry, because they wreck my hair. I suspect though that some hair is tougher than others. Mine is quite thin, fine and wavy, but if yours isn't, well you know it best.

bloodyeffinnora · 23/05/2024 07:50

I get my hair coloured and used to have it straightened, but I've stopped using the straighteners now as my hair was frizzy and thinning, it's definitely in better condition now than it was.

MrsToothyBitch · 23/05/2024 08:39

I dye my hair and I have a natural wave that never looks tidy and which only heat styling removes. I hate the wave!

I blow dry and straighten my hair a couple of times a week/as needed. I use heat protectant spray, oil the ends and use a good shampoo and conditioner. I don't wash my hair more than twice a week unless there's a special reason though.

Hair is coloured blonde & I box dye it.

Beezknees · 23/05/2024 08:45

I do but I colour my hair dark so no bleach in it.

Brazilianblowout · 23/05/2024 08:48

Thanks everyone!

Sunnyandsilly · 23/05/2024 08:50

Straightening every day isn’t good, but if you use a good heat protector, that’s key. It is fine.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/05/2024 08:51

Yes I did and finally ended up with straw. I'm growing the whe lot out now and can't believe how thick and lush my natural hair is.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 23/05/2024 21:34

Your hairdresser is being a bit OTT, however almost everyday is a lot!
Have you considered investing in something like the shark flexstyle style or similar? They are supposed to gentler on the hair but you will still achieve a blow dried straight look.
