Neighbour taking months to collect a parcel?

I had an elderly man deliver a parcel to me and he asked if I’d mind taking in my neighbours (it was chucking it down too) and I said yes (despite not liking them.

Anyway, I left it on the side table and kind of forgot it for 2 days as I was going on holiday and really busy with work, packing and etc. I was away for 3 weeks, so I took the parcel round and no one was in so I left in by their side door. This was in March.

Today she knocked on my door asking for her parcel. Aibu to think waiting 2 months to collect a parcel is beyond ridiculous? And I didn’t have the damn thing anyway.

You shouldn’t have said yes, then put it somewhere it could easily be stolen, that wasn’t very neighbourly.

Just tell them what happened. Then never take in a parcel again.

You don't just leave a parcel by their door for heavens sake.

Is this a reverse?

Babadook76 · 21/05/2024 20:16

I dunno. I’d say you were kind of BU for taking in a parcel when you were going away for 3 weeks. I guess 2 days should have been plenty of time for them to initially collect it, but there may be a good reason why they were unable to. I think this one is awkward all round really

Side door, behind a gate.

My neighbour does the same and we have decided not to take parcels in anymore. They are usually for her son who doesn't live there. Sometimes we have large boxes for months in our hallway. God knows what's inside - we don't even know this man. So never again. They don't even bother coming for the package. At least your neighbour turns up.

I’m confused. The parcel was with you for two days. Then you went away for 3 weeks. Then you left it by the side door. Now they have come to collect it.

Did you tell them it was by the side door? If they don’t use that door they might not know.

Why didn’t you just leave it at your house if you were away and try again/wait for them to come round when you were home?

I think accepting delivery and then leaving it at their side gate is unreasonable. Either don’t accept the parcel at all or accept it and make sure it’s delivered to them. The courier could’ve left it at their gate and didn’t….
