We went up the escalator the wrong way

Has anyone ever done that?

Last week, I went shopping with my Dd, 5.
I was holding her hand, she was nattering away and I was looking around in the shops. We headed over to the moving stairs and I suppose, without really thinking about it, stepped on. We were sort of falling over, but it took me a while to register what was actually happening, I was trying to pull Dd up, but falling over myself. Managed to get us off, Dd was a bit upset, I felt awful and just so bloody stupid.
It sort of sounds funny in a way and I made a joke of it with Dd afterwards saying how silly I was etc, but how is that possible
It was early morning and I’m early peri I think, but still 🥺

Just me then 😬😨

Honestly, I wouldn’t give this another thought. No one was hurt.

Loveheartsandlockets · 20/05/2024 23:12

Were you going up or down? DH once tried running up the down escalator but the security guard came and told him off.

TeaKitten · 20/05/2024 23:15

It’s not a big deal is it. I regularly try and get into my house using the central locking on my car keys, my kids think I’m silly but nobody is hurt so who cares?

TeaKitten · 20/05/2024 23:16

Also a little odd your 5 year old didn’t realise it was the wrong way, mind would have been all over that!

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 20/05/2024 23:19

Falling over or losing your balance on an escalator is terrifying. It happened to me when my mum got her bag trapped. It was so dangerous. Must be much worse with a small child. Sounds like you coped really well, OP.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 20/05/2024 23:25

I don't know why I've just found that so bloody funny 😂

Silly mistake, it happens.

Hope you're both ok x

Whydididothathey · 20/05/2024 23:56

@Loveheartsandlockets We were trying to go up the stairs that were moving down, no idea why Dd didn’t notice either, it was like we were in a foggy dream, then we were like ‘Ah’ and I was trying to keep Dd up, looking at our feet thinking wtf?! Then I clocked on and got us both off and hurried onto the going up one. I was so embarrassed and Dd nearly crying, so awful but also so ridiculous 🙈

Thankfully you weren't hurt, but escalators are not to be fucked with. They are very powerful, potentially dangerous machines. If your feet, clothing, hands were caught in their teeth, the results would be catastrophic. Don't do this again.

FiveGuyPastry · 21/05/2024 00:04

“Do not fuck with an escalator”. That was the last piece of advice my Gran gave me on her death bed. She had three toes on one foot, never asked her why.

HideTheRockyBars · 21/05/2024 02:15

I did this once when shopping with a school friend and her mum. I think we were following the mum and no one realised until we were all on it. We persevered for the fun of it (something I remember my mum would never do 😂) and all collapsed in an exhausted hysterical heap at the top.

We must have been mad. I'd never do it again. Or allow my kids to do it.

Garlicked · 21/05/2024 02:25

I've done it often on purpose 😂 Been sternly told off via the announcement system for 'floating' and dancing up the down escalators. Not when there other people on, I hasten to add!

Sorry, OP, it's easily done I should think.

She didn’t do it deliberately. Did you not read the post?

MrsBobtonTrent · 21/05/2024 07:41

Stuff happens. But do stop blaming everything on “peri”: We all make mistakes all the time but if we keep creating this myth than all women of a developmental stage are a write-off, we will be written off.

Dietstarts · 21/05/2024 07:45

It happens. I wouldn't give it any more thought. Though escalators are so incredibly dangerous, I didn't realise until I started my new job, we have so many accidents on them. I make my children take the stairs or the lift now!

sorrynotathome · 21/05/2024 07:49

WTF is “early peri”?! YABU

PuttingDownRoots · 21/05/2024 07:54

My mother did it a few months ago. M&S has three escalators for some reason, and they changed the direction of the middle one. She got a real scare

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 21/05/2024 08:01

Well at least you won't make that mistake again 😉
I feel for you though, not only embarrassing but escalators are scary and dangerous.
Dd once got her long skirt caught in one, it was basically eating her skirt as we had a tug of war with it whilst traveling down trying to not topple over.
One day you'll say to dd over a glass of 🍷
"Hey dd, remember that time we tried to go up the down escalator" then you'll have a giggle.
Incidents like this, where no one has been hurt, just turn into a funny story eventually 😁

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 21/05/2024 08:15

Going up the escalator the wrong way at least once is one of life's little pleasures, especially if you can go the whole way :)

LadyHavelockVetinari · 21/05/2024 10:46

Oh OP this stuff happens!! Can I ask (gently and with apologies for the unsolicited comment) is everything ok? Because it seems like you've taken a silly easy mistake really quite hard. I think I would have laughed and we'd have said silly mummy and moved on. I get in my head like this about things when I'm stressed or down about something, might be worth thinking about.

SherrieElmer · 21/05/2024 11:18

What a traumatising experience. The local shrink is rubbing their hands together already salivating about the millions of pounds he is going to make off you.

Just joking. It's not the end of the world!
