AIBU to ask whether artificial intelligence will destroy the planet because it uses so much energy

I was listening to the radio and it said something like Microsoft have said their carbon footprint has increased 30 percent because of the energy needed for AI. I have used it recently to write some text and I know some new papers use it for certain items. So will our obsession with and use of AI undo any good we are trying to do to save the planet.

No idea to be honest, but I did see a very interesting interview with the former Vice President of Google who is an expert on AI and in the next 5-20 years it’s going to surpass human intelligence. And then, who knows what will happen?

takemeawayagain · 19/05/2024 20:08

The answer may be quantum computers.

sp1ders · 19/05/2024 20:08

Quantum computers will be able to access the conscious world then who knows what'll happen.

We'll have to unplug them so we can defend ourselves 😂

No moreso than cryptocurrencies. At least there's an actual point to AI, rather than increasingly complex proofs of work.

theGooHasGone · 19/05/2024 20:10

Also, if AI destroys the planet it won't be from energy use. Just saying.

TrickorTreacle · 19/05/2024 20:24

AI can only do specific things such as playing chess, something that has been around for decades. It won't take over humans in 5 to20 years time @Macbeff

The media loves buzz-words, AI being one of the latest ones.

Phew then I won’t feel guilty when I use ai…it seems like everything you do or eat is wrong lately.
