I feel bad for bitching about my manager

Usually I am on very good terms with my manager, however the other day my manager cancelled my holiday and it upset me because I always help out, so I started bitching with other members of staff about what had happened in the staff toilets and then she walks in and we all go silent. I’m now horrified she thinks I’m a bitch and I feel terrible, I was just letting of steam but that’s no excuse.

Do you think she probably heard or knew we were talking about her?

Am I being unreasonable in feeling terrible?

I wouldn’t overly worry (although don’t make a habit of it!). She was probably feeling bad about it already, and may well feel worse, but as long as what you were saying was genuine then she’ll just be in no doubt of your feelings on the matter.

It wouldn’t be inappropriate for you to raise it with her - just saying “sorry I hadn’t intended for you to hear my comments yesterday, I was just extremely disappointed”. If she’s professional she will graciously accept the apology and be understanding, explaining that she really wouldn’t have cancelled your holiday unless it was absolutely necessary.

You’ve got every right to complain about your manager- to anyone you like.
As a manager, for sure it is unpleasant, but surely not unexpected. You can’t do something like that without pissing people off!

If you feel you must bring it up with her, then do not apologise for saying it, say sorry it wasn’t intended that you hear my conversation with x

Honestly, you won’t get far at work bitching about colleagues. To do it in the work toilets is very silly.

These people (colleagues and manager) are not your pals. If you take your career seriously, you need to treat everyone with professionalism and politeness and not get carried away with this stuff.
