Group chats and 'happy birthday' messages

AIBU that in group chats (I'm talking about bigger group chats here, those of 3-6ish people are excluded) it is VERY annoying that when someone wishes 'Sarah' a happy birthday, everyone else in the group then also does the same. The number of messages, the implied pressure to do the same- really annoys me! And does 'Sarah' actually care about getting 20 WhatsApp messages all saying the same thing?! (But with variations on wording and emojis to keep it fresh...)

Yes I have archived the chat but sometimes I do need to scroll through the infinity of birthday messages to find messages with actual importance. I also don't like that I can see there are unread messages in my WhatsApp archived section and end up opening the chat to get rid of them. Make of that what you will.

The killer for me is my work group of 25- everyone wishes everyone happy birthday which means ~600 messages a year!

I hereby propose that in all group chats, when someone identifies a birthday, they can write the happy birthday message. Other participants should just 'thumbs up' 'heart' 'balloon' emoji (or other emoji of choice) this message to indicate their shared sentiment.

YABU: No, I like it in big group chats when everyone wishes everyone a happy birthday.

YANBU: bdaygrinch is right and we back her proposal. Future PM in the making.

Can’t say I like it, but who cares, each to their own.

Completely agree, especially when the group chat is for a club or organisation - so there is actual useful information in between "happy birthday Debra!" "have a great day!" "happy birthday lovely" "enjoy yourself!" etc.

I'd prefer a card.

I have blocked group chats. It is easy to do if you don't like them. You do have a choice.

YABU. Leave the groups.

Meh. I hear ya but what can you do?
Was in a class parents WhatsApp and it was very useful til someone posted a pic of their dog. Omg I never knew so many people had pets and were happy to go on and on and on about them! People without pets started posting pics of animals too...ugh. I just want to know if Friday is mufti day not that your pup is the cutest thing on earth or that some squirrel visits your garden every day!
