AIBU that in group chats (I'm talking about bigger group chats here, those of 3-6ish people are excluded) it is VERY annoying that when someone wishes 'Sarah' a happy birthday, everyone else in the group then also does the same. The number of messages, the implied pressure to do the same- really annoys me! And does 'Sarah' actually care about getting 20 WhatsApp messages all saying the same thing?! (But with variations on wording and emojis to keep it fresh...)
Yes I have archived the chat but sometimes I do need to scroll through the infinity of birthday messages to find messages with actual importance. I also don't like that I can see there are unread messages in my WhatsApp archived section and end up opening the chat to get rid of them. Make of that what you will.
The killer for me is my work group of 25- everyone wishes everyone happy birthday which means ~600 messages a year!
I hereby propose that in all group chats, when someone identifies a birthday, they can write the happy birthday message. Other participants should just 'thumbs up' 'heart' 'balloon' emoji (or other emoji of choice) this message to indicate their shared sentiment.
YABU: No, I like it in big group chats when everyone wishes everyone a happy birthday.
YANBU: bdaygrinch is right and we back her proposal. Future PM in the making.
