To ask for help with the next steps ..... credit card fraud

Apologies for my first ever post in AIBU. I did post a short while ago in a different topic but got no response.

A few weeks ago I used the booking.com website to try to book a hotel in Thailand. I got almost to the end of the transaction when I received a message saying "there is a problem, please try again". I assumed I had put in an incorrect digit or expiry date so duly tried again and got the same message. I then used a different card and booked the hotel, still having no idea why my first credit card was rejected but stupidly, I didn't think much more of it.

Two days later I received a notice that my credit card (Marks and Spencer) was being debited with two charges to Amazon, Tokyo, totalling approximately £300 plus foreign transaction fees. I contacted M&S bank immediately but could only get through to their stupid chatbot and was told that as the charges were pending there was nothing they could do.

A few days later, the charges appeared on my statement and I disputed them asking them to be removed as I have never bought anything from Amazon in Japan. The person at the other end of the keyboard said that that was not possible as I had knowingly given my card details, even though I thought I was giving them to Booking.com.

They said they would report the matter to Mastercard but as yet I have had no response. So I got in touch again today and M&S have sent me a form to complete about goods I ordered which were not delivered. The form is totally inappropriate. I have sent copies of credit card statements, exact amounts, dates of transaction.

Booking.com said they investigated the hotel I have booked at and all is in order, I have not been overcharged and there is nothing they can do. I complained again to them and have had no reply.

I have complained to Amazon and after 24 minutes on hold was put through to Amazon Japan where no one spoke English and I don't speak Japanese. Also the line was so poor that I wouldn't understand even if they were speaking English!

What should I do? Who do I complain to as no one seems to want to know and I'm damned if some bloody scammer is going to steal £300 from me without putting up some kind of fight. 🤬. Sorry for the lengthy post but I am so frustrated! I realise my card details have been stolen but don't know who else to contact 🤷‍♀️

M&S are having you on. Speak to them again and open a Section 75 claim. They share joint responsibility with you, and you should get a refund.

@fishingfor Thanks so much for your reply. I hope you are right. I've got myself into a bit of a tizz worrying about it 😬
