When your title said baby I thought it was going to be about a 3 month old or something. 16 months is a toddler, this is par for the course. They all fall off things or into things or bump their heads a lot at this age. Keep an eye for signs of concussion (vomiting, drowsiness etc) but I’m sure he’ll probably be fine.

I feel so incredibly guilty I can't stop crying he's a bump I know toddlers fall
But he's never falling off something before

Also if it makes you feel any better my eldest fell off the bed at the same age because it was covid lockdown and I was trying to take a Teams call for work at the same time as look after her 😬 and I wasn’t paying enough attention to her playing on the bed. I felt awful but she was fine

ClaustrophobicKipper · 14/05/2024 04:20

I feel for you op it is such a hard age at times. They are tougher than you think though, as long as no signs of concussion he should be fine. Everything feels worse in the middle of the night especially when you can't get a good relax and sleep.

Just make a barrier for the side of the bed so it doesn’t happen again, you can put rolled up towels under the bedsheet so he can’t easily roll out

Try not to feel guilty, accidents happen unfortunately. His crying was probably more due to getting a fright and his own frustration at teething/not being able to sleep.

Cuddle into him and try get some sleep while you can ❤️

DifficultBloodyWoman · 14/05/2024 04:27

I’m impressed your child got to 16 months without a fall off a bed or couch!

Please don’t worry unless he has signs of concussion. It is very normal for toddlers to fall and bump their heads. Also very normal for parents to worry about it than the injury warrants.

yvonneb13 · 14/05/2024 04:34

It's just because he's got lump aswell i honestly can't see me sleeping is letting him sleep okay?

friggingnora · 14/05/2024 04:44

Yes let him sleep. If you woke him now you wouldn't be able to assess him anyway. A&E would be massive overkill without any symptoms other than a bump. If it makes you feel better ring GP in the morning, but for now sleep is best for both of you.

GlueNoGlue · 14/05/2024 07:42

I’m pretty sure everyone’s baby falls off the bed at least once and people just don’t mention it? Hope you managed to get some sleep and you’re both ok today!

PineappleBanana · 14/05/2024 07:44

Just stick some butter (proper butter) on the bump and relax. It’s a right of passage.

AllBlackEverything · 14/05/2024 07:47

Oh OP, you sound distraught! Please don't worry, as PP said, it's pretty much happened to most children at one point or another! It's how I found out my first could roll. I looked away for a moment at about 6 months old and he just rolled himself off the bed. I was so upset, but when I spoke to friends almost everyone said it had happened with their babies at some point. He will be OK.

yvonneb13 · 14/05/2024 09:00

He seems absolutely fine and the lump I thought I felt last night isn't there now so I'm not sure if I made that up in my tired panic I did get such a fright tho

Currently bf a 3 week old, therefore my 20 month old has fallen off every chair, couch and toy in the house. I thought this was normal 😅. She's grand!

Sometimes if they cry a lot they can look a bit puffy on the forehead. One of mine was a bit like that. Luckily I noticed it when there had been no bump or I’d have panicked too. Also bumps on foreheads come up quite dramatically as the skin is stretched quite tightly against the bone so any swelling at all pushes it out. I’m sorry: it’s awful when they hurt themselves but just keep an eye on him. I tended to always take them to be checked after a head bump but I think sometimes the hospital thought it was overkill. They won’t say so though, and will check him, if it would make you feel better.

DaisyChain505 · 14/05/2024 10:40

It’s a right of passage I promise you. Every parent has a falling off the bed situation at one point or another.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 14/05/2024 10:42

It’s scary when things like this happen and natural to blame yourself but honestly toddlers jump and fall off all sorts of things. One of mine decided they could fly across the bedroom and land on a bottom bunk bed. The metal frame got in the way of their forehead. The gash and subsequent black eye were impressive. And don’t get me started on the whole flight of stone steps that they decided made a great “ski jump” apparently…. ( made a perfect landing on that one)

WhosBob · 14/05/2024 10:45

Mine fell down the stairs at that age. He was absolutely fine. They're more resilient than you think

portocristo · 14/05/2024 10:46

Oh my love they all do this, he'll be fine.

Butter??

Sunshineclouds11 · 14/05/2024 10:58

How is he this morning?

Bumps on foreheads always look worse I think.

I was told though via A&E to make sure you can stir them every hour or so after, so moving his arm to see if moves etc.

My older one was climbing in the playground at around that age. I hovered underneath ready to catch him. We did the climbing net, the obstacle course and the balance beams without an issue.

It was time to go home. I put him next to the pram and knelt down to check something underneath. He faceplanted on the ground without any warning whatsoever and his head and cheek caught the edge of the metal bin.

A&E job that one. It's weird how accidents with kids happen when you least expect them to. Same child managed to fracture a bone just standing on the pavement once (🙄).
