To ask what an IBS flare looks like for you?(gross subject!)

I think I’m in the middle of one. At least I hope that’s all it is.
had a sandwich and a donut earlier, and within 10mins my stomach was agony. Annoyingly, I was on the motorway and about an hour from home, so I put my foot down and hoped for the best!
got home and went to the loo, did have a BM. Wasn’t particularly awful but didn’t feel ‘done’ and my tummy was still quite uncomfortable.
fast forward a few hours and I’ve taken paracetamol and tried to use the bathroom a few times since. Not much has happened apart from a bit of mucous(sorry!)
I feel rubbish. Just want to go to bed and sleep it off but my toddler has other ideas. I feel really upset aswell for some reason.
just wondered if this sounds like a typical IBS flare
thanks

Mine tend to start with a gurgle, which then turns to gripping pains. When I’m having a flare I get constipated and can often vomit, particularly if I drink anything to try to help. I am learning what triggers it and have Colpermin (so?)) in every handbag so I can take one as soon as the pains start.
Have you been diagnosed with IBS? Could it just be a stomach bug/food poisoning?
Hope you feel better soon

JaceLancs · 12/05/2024 18:27

Could you be wheat or gluten intolerant - my IBS improved a lot when I cut it out, more recently have become lactose intolerant too
Fodmap diet is worth trying just to identify your worst triggers

Tummytrubs · 12/05/2024 18:28

I’ve had IBS for as long as I can remember. It’s been diagnosed. I take colofac before eating any of my known triggers and can usually avoid a flare.
I don’t feel sick as such, just this gripey pain around where my navel is.

Yes it’s wheat and gluten that are my triggers. But I was at a service station so my options were pretty limited

Mine is triggered by wheat/gluten. Gurgling, twisty pain then explosive diarrhea followed by feeling like i need to go to the toilet for several hours.

Back on the old low carb from tomorrow again to get it back under control as I hate taking the medication

Tummytrubs · 12/05/2024 18:36

Yes this is a twisty type of pain. Feeling thoroughly fed up and rather sorry for myself. The pain doesn’t usually last this long

Have you tried a heat pad or similar? I know not ideal on a day like today! Or a warm bath?

I haven’t. I’m not keen on warm stuff like that. Plus it’s swelteringly hot tonight isn’t it. I’m hoping this storm clears the air a bit

It’s not raining here but has cooled down a lot and there is a bit of a breeze.

Tummytrubs · 12/05/2024 19:08

It has cooled down. I’d love to open the window, but my toddler is asleep. The thunder is so loud so I’m reluctant to wake him up!

For me a full on flare is agonising crampy twisty pain off and on, sweating, basically curl up in a ball in agony. Take buscopan IBS asap then again an hour later etc and ride it out with frequent urgent messy loo trips. Trigger seems to be shop pastry, things like those Portuguese custard tarts but also had it from steak, difficult to pin point a trigger as doesn't happen often.

Tummytrubs · 12/05/2024 19:18

These are all really interesting. I’ve still got the tummy pain. Accompanied with some gurgling. I’m going to try and get some sleep now that DS is asleep(for how long is anyone’s guess!)

To be honest, I think I’ve just overindulged this weekend as I’ve been away. Wine, sun, rich food. I’m my own worst enemy at times!
