Should you rest when you have tonsilitis?

For those of you who have had tonsilitis before how long have you rested for? When you were given antibiotics have you still gone into the office? I had it a couple of months ago and it’s come back again, I just want to try and do everything right so it doesn’t come back after this but I can’t afford the time off work.

Yes, lots of fluids and change your Toothbrush

Createausername1970 · 11/05/2024 18:56

There was no specific instructions to rest, it basically boiled down to how I felt. Sometimes it wasn't so bad and I did go into work, other times I was quite feverish with it and did take time off and stayed in bed.

Cloud44 · 11/05/2024 18:57

How long did you rest for @BusyCM ? How did you both prevent it from coming back again?

If you've had it recently and then again it could be the same infection that wasn't really gone the first time. Therefore I would definitely rest and let your body recover. Also you may need a blood test to rule out glandular fever?

I had horrendous recurring tonsillitis as a child and teenager and finally got rid through homeopathy. Not sure if that's your sort of things but it worked for me and then for my daughter who was exactly the same as me.

Hope you feel better soon OP ❤️

I was off sick for a week.

BusyCM · 11/05/2024 18:58

I rested until my fever went. It still comes back though, some people are just prone to getting it.

Cloud44 · 11/05/2024 18:59

What sort of homeopathy @Monwmum ? I think it maybe the same infection not fully cleared.

I felt terrible when I had it as I had a really high fever. It was a few days before I got the antibiotics and then a couple of days for them to work so I was off a week as well.

Skybluepinky · 11/05/2024 19:09

Had it loads of times normally until medication kicks in normally 24 hours after first dose.

lavenderlou · 11/05/2024 19:12

My 14 year old has had it 5 times in 5 months. I do let her stay home and rest as it really wipes her out. GPs don't want to give her antibiotics now as she's had so many so not sure what to do other than rest and wait it out. Her school attendance is dreadful.

Newsenmum · 11/05/2024 19:13

Life’s too short - I’d definitely stay home and rest tbh.

buffyslayer · 11/05/2024 19:36

I stayed off for 4 days but I had a really high temp and no voice (I can't work with no voice!)

mtg35 · 11/05/2024 19:39

I had tonsillitis a few years ago and simply couldn't have gone to work for a few days til the penicillin started to work. I guess it just depends on how unwell you feel and what your work involves. Hope you feel better soon.

Cloud44 · 11/05/2024 19:43

I think I’m worried if I don’t rest enough it’ll come back again but if I feel ok ish should I try and work as normal. I’m paranoid about it coming back basically.

WonderingWanda · 11/05/2024 19:47

I don't think how much rest you have will have any bearing on whether it comes back. Just make a judgement, do you feel well enough?

Cloud44 · 11/05/2024 19:49

I just don’t know why it’s come back a second time so quickly!

I had it in and off fire a couple of years as an adult. I don't know why and I never had it as a child. If you can rest, I'm sure it would help but I had 3 small kids and a job, so I just kept going.
Now, if I get a sore throat, I swear by gargling with salt water several times a day. Just dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of boiled, cooled water. I think it wipes out all bugs in your throat.

Blarn · 11/05/2024 19:57

I was sick and had fevers with tonsillitis, couldn't go into work until I felt well enough, sometimes that was still when I had spots on my throat. Had them removed, much better now!

I just went to see a homeopath and explained that I had repeated tonsillitis. Same with my daughter. With a couple of appointments and some different pills I was sorted 🙂

protectthesmallones · 11/05/2024 20:45

I had recurrent tonsillitis for years. I developed antibiotic resistance so whatever I took didn't work. However, I had a really bad bout and was so poorly. Since then it's never reoccurred. I think my body made its own immunity.

When I was poorly with it I'd feel absolutely vile for about a week. Then it cleared. I had young children so I had to carry on despite feeling ill.

5128gap · 11/05/2024 21:00

Just listen to your body. It knows when it needs to rest and will tell you. If you feel tired, fatigued and low and everything is an effort, then rest accordingly. As you start to feel better, pick up your activity. Everyone's body is different, so there's no rules. More important imo is to take great care with your diet, nutritious food only, avoid alcohol/processed/sugar. Take vit D and spend some time every day in fresh air and natural light. Manage stress, as relaxation is as important as rest. Obviously no guarantees but you'll give yourself the best chance of fighting it off.

LakieLady · 11/05/2024 21:00

I had my tonsils out in 1969, but I can still remember how awful it made me feel.
One year, I was off school one week out of three, because it just kept on recurring. Hopefully, they've got better antibiotics now.

I was so bloody glad when they finally agreed to remove the damn things.

Cloud44 · 12/05/2024 09:09

Thank you everyone, I’m feeling really fed up with it. For those of you who had it several times did the doctors know why it kept coming back?
