I like someone at work who's 2 years younger than me.
We're in different departments, and I usually see him once or twice a week. We have so much in common, he's one of the few people I feel like I could just talk to non stop.
We talk when we see each other in the office and occasionally on work chat, the chat is jokey and very mild teasing.
It's my birthday coming up so I mentioned I'd be going out with a few people if he wanted to come. He said it sounded really fun, and he'd be up for it.
Then the next time I saw him he asked when my birthday was.
He said to a mutual colleague I'm really nice and 'sweet' and we talk a lot.
He told me he likes talking to me.
It's hard to say, it could just be entirely friendly on his part. I felt him looking at me a certain way, but that could be all in my head or just meaningless.

Also, I know some people will say don't date at work.

I say that.

Sacredwasps · 10/05/2024 09:19

I understand why people say that, but we have a few couples and I don't see him there every day. I don't know ..

Nah, go for it! Loads of people meet at work.

Nomechange1 · 10/05/2024 09:21

No one knows op. Just ask him out. 'Be great if you can make my birthday but I wondered if you fancied going for a drink before that over the weekend? Here's my number'

If he says no or fobs you off you've lost nothing at all.

Message him now!

Duh · 10/05/2024 09:22

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with dating someone at work.

See how things go at your birthday drinks.

Good luck OP!

Sacredwasps · 10/05/2024 09:47

The only thing I will say is that he doesn't start the online chats first. When I do, he seems receptive and asks me questions, but he doesn't start them first.

Thousands of people meet their partner at work so don't be put off my the negativity towards it! One of my colleagues works with his ex wife and his current wife so it can't be that bad 😄
Enjoy flirting at your birthday drinks and see what happens.

Sunnyandsilly · 10/05/2024 09:54

Go out for your birthday and see what happens.

Nettie1964 · 13/05/2024 13:21

People meet people from work all the time. See how the birthday goes.

Sootyb · 13/05/2024 13:28

Of course you can date someone at work, that's were I meet my husband, been together now 24 years

SerenChocolateMuncher · 13/05/2024 13:31

Before meeting meeting people online became a bug thing, at work was the most common place to meet a life partner. If you are both keen, I wouldn't let the fact that you work together put you off.

PossumintheHouse · 13/05/2024 13:33

I'm another one who met their partner at work, so I'd be a hypocrite to discourage it. You're also working in different departments, so there is that space between you if it goes tits up. One thing I would say is it's a good idea to take things slower than normal and really think about how you'll feel and deal with it if the feelings aren't reciprocated or it doesn't work out (either short or long-term). Is this something you could accept if you continue to work in the same building?

SeriaMau · 13/05/2024 14:39

Creepy behaviour. So many red flags. I would run a mile, but at least go NC.

What planet are you on?
It's a perfectly normal interaction for goodness sake.

This is either the wrong thread or your red flagdar is way, way off. 😂

RobinsNesting · 13/05/2024 14:59

I say go for it. Go on! You never know he may well be your person.

Conniebygaslight · 13/05/2024 15:28

Well if it's a choice between someone at work who you have got to know a little bit and like or someone from the internet who you'd have to start from scratch with I'd go for it. He might not message you first because he feels awkward and worries that his behaviour could be seen as inappropriate....some men are very scared to be taken the wrong way especially in the work place.
Good luck whichever you decide.

It's creepy to talk to people at work?

Do you not speak to people?

KimberleyClark · 13/05/2024 15:52

I’m not sure about the “sweet”. I think it’s a bit patronising.

Kingoftheroad · 13/05/2024 15:57

@Conniebygaslight makes a really good point. He probably doesn’t message first because it can be misconstrued.

see how it goes at your birthday but I’d totally wait for him to make the first move.

I would advise to take things really slowly for a couple of months just to make absolutely sure of your feelings

Wishing you the very best

Trulyme · 13/05/2024 16:17

When is your birthday OP ?
Is it soon?

I would perhaps wait until then and see if he goes out and if you get chatting on the night out.

I probably wouldn’t keep mentioning the night out, as he could have just been being polite.

He could just be being friendly (the ‘sweet’ comment makes me think this).

Or he could fancy you but doesn’t know if you feel the same.

TheGoddessFreyja · 13/05/2024 16:28

Met my Fiancé at work ☺️
He was my manager and I thought he was a proper twat at first. Moved teams and turns out he was alright 😂

Loads of relationships start at work 🥰
