Can somebody confirm if this is right? Part time working holiday amount

Been offered a job and they have said I will get 14 days of holiday a year. This is based on working 16-20 hours. Is this right? I thought it would be more but I’m unsure.

What would you get if you're full time? How many hours are classed as full time?

Full time holiday days divide by full time hours, multiply by hours you're going to work = (if 14, yes, that's right)

Yes it's right, say you only work 3 full days you only need to take off 3 days to take a weeks holiday.

Ok thank you. Only ever worked full time do I wasn’t sure. I think it would be 16-20 hours over 4 or 5 days

It's actually very generous. 16/37.5 is 0.427. Reverse calculating your pro rata hours on your holiday days means a full time worker getting 14/0.427 = 32 days holiday. That's a very generous company, minimum is 28 days.

It’s usually pro rota and calculated in hours.

So if you do 16 hours. Then your holiday allowance will be-

16/40 of full time

= 0.4 of holiday allowance

= 10 days

20 hours

20/40 = half full time people, so 2 1/2 weeks. (12 1/2 days)

Sometime if you work bank holidays, you have to take these as part of your holiday allowance.

if you work shorter days, or uneven days, calculated in hours, not days

(I’ve assumed five weeks holidays, ie 25 days,)

If you work 3 x 6 hour days a week your allowance in days will be different to 4 x 4.5 hour days. But you'll still need the same proportion of your allowance to take a full week off.

I don't know how the above works if you are contracted to 16 hours but sometimes work 20, but you should earn extra leave in line with extra hours worked.

Your company should work out everyone's leave in terms of hours per year then it's easy to see how it's been compared fairly with full timers.

I work 16 hours a week (spread over 3 days). I get 12 days + paid bank holidays. It was a shock for me too after working full time

If its over 5 days then that's not enough.

Every company in the UK has to legally give you 4 weeks off work

If you only work 4 days then that's 16 of your days holiday

When I started in my current job (small organisation - don't blame them) - I confused everybody with my explanations of why the holiday allowance was wrong, but they started showing the holiday in hours rather than days. I'd come from a part-time job in a large company where holiday was shown in hours, so spotted quickly that by showing it in days I was losing out on holiday, because I was working 5hrs a day but a days holiday was at full time hours.
