About Birds Eye beef burgers…

They’ve been a guilty pleasure of mine for YEARS. My perfect comfort food was always burgers with potato waffles and spaghetti hoops - a childhood treat that always makes me feel happy.

Imagine my horror to discover they changed the recipe and they now comprise 20% pea protein and 55% beef.

I don’t want a plant burger. I want my BEEF(ish) burgers.

Yes, I know they’re unhealthy. And ultra processed. And probably about as meaty and nutritious as dog food. But why did they have to go and ruin it.

(PS - has anyone actually tasted them and are they as awful as I’m imagining? I do eat a lot of plant based alternatives but I HATE pea protein based stuff with a passion!)

(Also happy to accept that I may be acting like a highly unreasonable, tantrumming toddler)

Not had those but bernard matthews mini kievs have changed recipe I don't know what to but they are now disgusting

RedRobyn2021 · 09/05/2024 08:51

I was always the same about turkey dinosaurs, smilie faces and baked beans 😂 dear me

Unabletomitigate · 09/05/2024 08:52

It says something about our food supply when beef burgers are only 55% beef, and the rest is made up of what is probably industrial waste products.

OMG. Turkey dinosaurs are AMAZING! I forgot they even existed.

Maybe I should switch my comfort food to them instead!

(Still in mourning for my beef burgers though)

In fairness, I don’t think the ingredients are THAT terrible. They’re certainly not good for you, but it doesn’t mean they’re comprised of horse entrails and cow snouts either.

I'd stick with your Birds Eye burgers at 55% Beef, as Turkey Dinosaurs are even worse at 43% Turkey! Although, turkey dinosaurs are amazing, love them with smiley faces and beans!😆
Or you could look at changing the brand of your beef burgers. Tesco frozen pack of 8 beef burgers gets you a hearty 82% beef.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 09/05/2024 09:01

Not beef burgers but I bought a Sainsburys tomato and marscapone pasta sauce yesterday, have it regularly with tortellini for a quick tea. It was absolutely revolving, bitter and sour, fuck knows what they've done to it but I'm guessing they've removed at least any sugar

Sparklfairy · 09/05/2024 09:01

Wait, so you haven't even tasted them since they changed it, you've just decided you don't/won't like them because you've read the new ingredients? Weird. I wonder if you'd have even noticed if you hadn't found out about the recipe change, considering they're not even really beef anyway.

There's nothing actually wrong with offal, it's just that our modern tastes demand we only eat the premium cuts (such as chicken breast).

I'm all for using the parts that people otherwise wouldn't touch in burgers and hotdogs. It saves it going to waste.

As they say about pigs, the only thing you can't eat is the oink...

Entrails and snouts would actually be very nutritious!

Many relatively poor people used to keep a pig for pretty much their sole source of meat. As has been said, the only part of it they didn’t consume was the squeak.

It would make me not want to try them, doesn't sound particularly appealing. Why can't they just keep the original as is and make a low fat/low sugar/low taste version for those that want it, let people choose

qpid5tunt · 09/05/2024 10:45

I've always liked wall's sausages (the normal NOT the quick cook type.) The last lot we bought tho had crunchy bits in them and tasted different. Even the dog wasn't that keen and we've not bought them since.

Windwwwash · 09/05/2024 12:39

YANBU at all. I’d forgotten these existed but as soon as I saw your title I started salivating like Pavlov's dog.

Gutted they’ve been wrecked too because of course I’m now craving them, but maybe Birdseye will do a reverse like Cauldron did over their sausages?

I've just read a handful of reviews on a few different supermarket websites and everybody is giving them one star, declaring them 'a mushy mess' 'tasteless' and 'awful' so I can see why the OP might not want to waste her money trying them out....

(I also saw a few reviews where people had confused them with vegan/vegetarian burgers, because they make the 'with pea protein and onion' so big on the packet, it suggests they are meat free burgers...)

This. And at £6 a box, they’re not exactly super cheap either if they do end up being completely rubbish!

I'm actually tempted to try them now Grin I'm not vegetarian/vegan but I like Beyond Burgers which are 16% pea protein, the Birds Eye ones are 18% + 55% beef so by my thinking they're probably really nice.

The 'mushy mess' is probably from undercooking them, I've done that before with Beyond ones and it's like chewing papier mache Envy

I had a craving for Sugar Puffs a few months back and found out they've renamed them and taken all the sugar out. Just why? I'm fed up of being forced into healthy foods!

Wheredidallthecowboysgo · 09/05/2024 13:15

The annoying thing is that these new foods aren’t even healthy, they’re crammed full of sweeteners & other additives to avoid the sugar tax. Sorry that doesn’t relate to burgers but I’m so sick of how many drinks, yoghurts & desserts have been ruined by sweeteners!

They're still 14% sugar

Ambrosia Rice pudding is 9% rice! 9%!

It's not like the average BMI of the population goes down for it either!

But they don’t taste like beef burgers of childhood!
