To use Studex rather than a needle for daughter’s ear piercing?

Magpiesalute · 08/05/2024 14:02

My daughter, 12, would like her ears pierced. I’ve heard guns aren’t as safe as needles as they can cause trauma. I just rang somewhere and they said they use Studex, which is controlled by hand, not shot in like a gun and is safer like needles.
Has anyone used this option?
Is it a decent alternative to a needle?

It’s what Claire’s use, just go to a proper piercer

Peaceandquiet3638 · 08/05/2024 14:05

How is it different to a gun in that they pierce the hole with earring itself causing blunt trauma? I’d go for the needle definitely. You don’t need an alternative as that’s the best/safest way!

ObliviousCoalmine · 08/05/2024 14:17

It's the same thing with a name change. Still not sterile, still blunt force trauma. Still shit.

Magpiesalute · 08/05/2024 14:25

She said it is ‘hand controlled’ so not just shot in like a gun. She said it’s safer. I appreciate she’s trying to sell it to me though.

I wanted to go to a beauty salon or similar, rather than a tattoo/piercing place, but obviously want the safest option as my number 1 priority. I also don’t want to pay Astrid and Miyu prices!

It might be hand controlled in as far as they hold the gun in their hand, but it's still a piercing gun that forces the earring through the skin

FuzzyPenguin · 08/05/2024 14:31

Always go for a needle. The needle is hollow creates a slit for the earring to go through. The gun is a blunt force trauma to the ear.

If you look at a photo of one though, it is still a piercing gun that you would hold and click to pierce the ear. Can’t see any difference to that of a different gun. Personally I would choose a reputable tattoo/piercing place with good reviews etc as they will know what they’re doing.

A proper piercer will be more precise but as someone in the industry I have heard the newer guns are much much better.

It's the same thing. Literally the same. They've just dispensed with the outer 'gun' part and left the squeeze cartridge part and made out like they've reinvented the wheel.

Go to a piercer who uses a needle. You can find an APP registered one online. It won't cost more than £50 for the pair.

OrlandointheWilderness · 08/05/2024 15:05

Always a proper piercer. Mine were £30, and I wouldn't mind paying more considering you are paying for skill when putting a hole in part of your body! It's not something I want to skimp on tbh 😂.

TooMinty · 08/05/2024 15:08

The people in my local tattoo place are very friendly and would be fine with a 12 year old.

mindutopia · 08/05/2024 15:12

I would go to a proper piercer. I took my dd to a professional piercer at 8. It wasn't like in some dank dungeon tattoo parlour. It was a really nice, clean, sterile medical type setting and she was really lovely and professional and made it a good experience. The thing with ear piercings as opposed to other types of piercings is that you have to have it done twice. So you want someone who knows what they are doing, is calm, reassuring and can make it as easy as possible because once the first one goes in, they have to go and do the other one. They can also give proper aftercare guidance as well.

Magpiesalute · 08/05/2024 15:43

Ok, thanks all. I hear you loud and clear, I’ll find a needle place.

What's that when it's at home?

ShinyEspeon · 09/05/2024 18:44

I love my tattoo parlours to be like a dank dungeon personally. Makes me and my reprobate down and out personality feel more at home.

OP glad you're finding a needle place. SO much better!

ClipClopperDontStopper · 09/05/2024 19:15

A 'girlie' insta friendly piercing studio recently opened in my neighbourhood, more reasonably priced than Astrid & Miyu. Maybe do a search to see if there's anything like that near you.

Penguinmouse · 09/05/2024 19:18

Appreciate the cost but I had mine done at Astrid and Miyu and would really recommend. Very good aftercare.

Skihound · 09/05/2024 19:35

My 9 year old had hers done at proper tattoo / piercer was £15 (extra for solution) and had no trouble with them at all, she didn't flinch.

ElaineSqueaks · 09/05/2024 19:38

My dd absolutely loved going to a proper tattoo parlour to get her ears pierced. It was far more thrilling than Claire's.
