Nasal discharge - what is normal?

Just wanted to see what people think normal nasal discharge looks like.

I have allergies and am on medication all the time for that and with those allergies, dry air etc come sinus issues etc. So, I self diagnosed with sinusitis weeks ago, just because I know what it is like. I used a nebuliser twice daily to sort it and have done so for a MONTH and only just stopped. I also rinse twice daily all year around. I got rid of many large yellow lumps with blood etc. (sorry tmi) but they are now a lot less and small.

but still yellow. Is this normal? I don't think I know anything else? I have never ever had clear discharge only. I mean in my whole life.

But I feel worse although not sick. My nose and forehead don't feel right. I have no temperature. I thought I nip into the pharmacy later because apparently I can get treated there now for sinusitis but I am honestly not sure if I still have it or if I am just under the weather for some other reason? If I wait another day or two it might get worse very quickly again and I don't want that. Or the pharmacist will send me away today with nothing and I will feel like an imposter :(

I get hayfever, and that is clear, but can be copious if not on antihistamines. It's only yellow or green if I have a cold of some sort.

A German colleague had some theory about whether it was viral or bacterial infection by the colour, but I don't remember the details.

Yeah I am aware of that theory and always wondered about it. Because I next to clear discharge I have always also had yellow or so. I thought that's normal too.

No, I get seasonal and other allergies and it's always clear. I only ever have the gross green shit when I'm ill. Only when I've had an actual sinus infection it was yellow and revolting

Also suffering with sinusitis here! Pharmacist gave me fluticasone propionate over the counter. They said it would be exactly the same meds but I would have to pay a prescription price if I went through the see the pharmacy service. They said if it doesn't clear up and the discharge is yellow or green to see the GP as it may need antibiotics to clear an infection.

I've got a perpetual runny nose, always clear unless I'm unwell.

Its worse when I'm eating, no idea why, DM suffers too!

BubblePopPop · 08/05/2024 15:05

I have allergic rhinitis, my nose constantly runs and I have to keep a packet of tissues with me wherever I go 🙄 It starts running as soon as I eat anything. If I sneeze it starts dripping like a tap. Mine is always clear though. It’s only ever yellow when I have a cold.

The pharmacy gave me antibiotics. Whether or not I have sinusitis still nobody knows, but my head feels strange and dizzy and I have some pain in my forehead so will take them and see.

Glad to hear they didn't send you away with nothing! Hope you feel better soon.
