Have we just been unlucky? Would you try again?

We’re currently on our first family holiday abroad (me, dp and our 2 year old)- 11 nights/10 days. We go home on Friday morning.

Night 1 and day 1 and night 2 went as expected - swimming, going to the entertainment, a good time ect.

Day 3 - dp was sick in the morning and then 2 year old got really tired and slept for ages from about 4pm

Day 4 - We ended up having to go to hospital as 2 year olds temperature wouldn’t go down and they were concerned he may have a fit if it couldn’t be controlled

Day 5-8 - 2 year old unhappy, tired, hot on antibiotics and paracetamol and ibuprofen and not wanting to eat or drink much and sleeping loads and dp feeling sick/dizzy/exhausted every day

Night 8 - 2 year old feeling much better but dp still feels awful so we stayed in after food and had an early night

Day 9 (now) 2 year old is completely fine (although scared of the pool and won’t go near it - he loves going swimming at home so I think he might be scared it’s what made him sick which it might have been) and dp is feeling a bit better but still not the best

It’s our last day tomorrow.

Would you try again next year?
Have we just been really unlucky or are holidays just not for us?

We went at this time of year as we don’t enjoy hot weather. It is how I expected it to be so I think we picked the best weather one 🤷‍♀️

It wasn’t cheap to go on holiday and I really don’t know what is best in the future 😫

Are you in Turkey by any chance?

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 08/05/2024 13:44

where are you? It sounds like you’ve been very unlucky - I wouldn’t let it put me off but I do love holidays!

mindutopia · 08/05/2024 13:49

I think you've been unlucky. I'd maybe try a different location/resort/style of holiday though. Honestly, I've travelled a lot and except for the time I went to India and proceeded to treat my 2 week holiday like I lived there (I used to live there and ate like a local then), I've never been sick on any holiday ever in my life. I think you just got unlucky.

PineappleTime · 08/05/2024 13:50

You've been unlucky. But ten days holiday in one place with a toddler is a lot!!

Ritadidsomethingbad · 08/05/2024 13:51

Oh god 2 is the worst age to go on holiday!

Ours wasn’t great either.

But they will get better!

TakeOnFlea · 08/05/2024 13:51

Where are you?

ToxicChristmas · 08/05/2024 13:55

I definitely wouldn't give up on holidays! I think the majority of people if asked would say they've had at least one shocker. I got really sick in the Dominican Republic, and then another year DH and DS got ill when we were in Holland. We've had so many other holidays that were absolutely fine.

Crowgirl · 08/05/2024 13:58

Can't even imagine thinking to not go on holiday because you've been sick on one holiday.

I mean even if I was sick on 3/4/5 in a row I'd still keep trying.

This is bad luck. You're not inherently unlucky.
Toddlers are always getting sick and spreading bugs.

Crowgirl · 08/05/2024 13:58

Sorry you've had a rotten time. Flowers

Fingers crossed your last day is joyous and next time a blast!

LauderSyme · 08/05/2024 13:59

You've been unlucky. It would be a great shame to decide that holidays are not for you based on this one bad experience. Maybe you could try something completely different next time? There are so many exciting holiday options.

RomeoRivers · 08/05/2024 14:00

You’ve just been unlucky. We regularly take our LOs on holiday and have never had any sickness. Although since having children we no longer choose cheap resorts, so perhaps it’s worth paying a bit more to ensure good food hygiene?

Where are you btw?

Why? Is this a common thing??

We’re in Turkey. I don’t want it to put us off either but dp isn’t keen on going through this again 😩

Yes! Don't go to Turkey again. The hygeine is 🤢

Youdontevengohere · 08/05/2024 14:05

Why would getting ill on one holiday mean it’s going to happen every holiday so there’s no point going again?! Of course you’ve just been unlucky this time. What else do you think the issue could be? Some phenomenon in which you’re going to have the same experience every year in some sort of Groundhog Day type scenario?

Amsterdamming · 08/05/2024 14:05

Next time go to Greece or Spain and pick somewhere with decent ratings and reviews. Don't let it put you off holidays completely.

TakeOnFlea · 08/05/2024 14:09

Spain, Italy, Greece would be better options for good hygiene

Foggymcfogson · 08/05/2024 14:09

We booked a caravan once. With 3 dc. Uk. All got a sick bug.. Advised to stay in the caravan to avoid spreading it. Dh went off shopping to seek a dvd player and films. Dd opened the door seeing him park up and the door flew open with dd still hanging on!! Omg how she didn't have severe injuries I don't know. She was 2!!
Still caravan now 15 years on!
Chalk it down to bad luck op.

portaide · 08/05/2024 14:11

Try a country with better hygiene next year and all will be well. You've been unlucky and 2 is a really tricky age to travel. It tends to be more work than being at home.

Haydenn · 08/05/2024 14:14

I always get sick when I fly. I work by myself and live quite rurally so think I don’t get exposed to bugs much. Put me in a metal tube for a few hours with a hundred and something strangers and I’m going to catch something

MrsToothyBitch · 08/05/2024 14:14

You've been unlucky, don't let it stop you!

ah yes, I would have put money on turkey or Egypt. Don’t go to either of those places again!

TiberiusFlam · 08/05/2024 14:28

I don’t understand the connection you’ve made here?
Why would a bad holiday stop you going on other holidays? Why would one bad holiday have influence over what happened next time?
”my coat got caught in the lift in Debenhams - would this just be bad luck or would you conclude that Debenhams/coats/lifts aren’t for me?”
”a bird pooed in my eye whilst I was eating a cake - coincidence or would you stop eating cake”
”I was painting my nails and a man fell down the chimney - bad luck or do I have to
give up nail varnish?”

The two things just don’t seem very connected? You were on holiday (life) and some of your party got sick (life)…

Sillystrumpet · 08/05/2024 14:31

I am not sure if your logic, are you really asking if this will happen on every holiday for ever more? And millions go to turkey and ar3 fine.

This is the point I was trying to make too, less eloquently! When you get ill at home you don’t think ‘we shouldn’t live here, this house makes us ill, we’re always going to get ill living in this house’, so I’m not sure why getting ill on one holiday would mean that you’re always going to get ill on holiday so shouldn’t bother again. I was bedridden with the flu last Christmas Day, that doesn’t mean we’re not going to bother celebrating Christmas this year. It seems a really odd way to think!
