My husband is SE and does property maintenance type stuff. He was hired to paint a kitchen, walls and cupboards. The customer also wanted tile sheets. They were happy with the price and aware it was an estimate.

3 days into the job that was estimated to take 5, my husband told them that it was going to take 2/3 further days (primarily due to how filthy their kitchen was!) They didn’t seem too happy and the next day told him not to start on the cupboards and just finish the tile sheets. The walls were all painted.

My husband finished the job, they were happy and he forwarded the invoice, payment due immediately. 5 working days later, still no payment. Not particularly unreasonable however, they are now ignoring him. No responses to the messages. He went round to the house, their car was on the drive and they refused to answer the door. They have also installed security cameras at the front and side of the property!

Finding it totally bizarre. They haven’t said they have any issues. We’re presuming they thought the invoice would be lower but they haven’t said!

AIBU to expect an explanation?!

Your husband is entitled to payment and should follow his collections process for this.
The client owes the money, not an explanation.
They have not disputed the invoice so full payment is due and can be chased via the courts or MCOL. I'd do that rather than asking a question when the obvious answer is they just don't want to pay.

Good luck, customers like this deserve the stuff ripping out but that just ends in tears.
