To think school should have given more notice?

Just found out my son who is in reception is doing an assembly week and parents can go and watch. He was really excited about me coming. But I can’t go because I have to work. I could have booked it off but a client meeting has been scheduled for then and can’t be moved now. If we had more notice this wouldn’t have been an issue. They normally put things in the calendar at the beginning of the year but this wasn’t there. AIBU to feel sad I can’t go because of the short notice?

Yanbu and it would be reasonable to say to the teacher that DC is really disappointed you won't be there and you would have been if there had been more notice so when is the next one going to be so you can get it in the diary now. If there won't be another this year make a reminder alarm for yourself for early September to ask the y1 teacher. It will happen again if you aren't proactive about finding out the dates rather than waiting to be told.

Yanbu.

I'm a teacher and wherever possible, would always give as much notice for things parents could attend. Usually at least 3/4 weeks.

Gentle feedback would be worth giving. Please remember the teacher is a human too though. I think some MNetters forget that.

Our school do this. They give maybe a days' warning.
No matter how many times I politely suggest a bit more notice would be helpful for working parents, it's ignored.
They are also usually at times like 11.10am or even worse 9.40am so going home after drop off is a waste of time. I sat on my phone with laptop on a bench last time to make my point 🙈

YANBU this kind of thing used to really piss me off when my kids were at school! These dates will have been decided months ago, there’s absolutely no excuse for the lack of communication
