To ask for a family recipe?

I'm a grown up and all cake is disappointing to me. I can't help but compare every cake to one that a neighbour used to bake as a child. She died a few years back. She was a lovely lady and we used to buy the cake from her.

I'm friends with her daughter on social media. We were not in the same circles back in the day, so not 'real life' friends. Would it be incredibly rude of me to message her and ask for the recipe, presuming she has it. I'm happy to pay. I don't know if the daughter bakes, but we live in different countries now, so I couldn't ask her to bake it for me for money.

I'm hoping she'll see it as a compliment that I remember her mom, and her cake, so fondly. However I'm also worried that she might be offended that I'm asking for the family jewels.

Would i be unreasonable to ask for the recipe, or do I just forget it and continue hating all cake forever?

Definitely ask. I would hope she would be touched you have such a positive memory of her mum.

And then you can share the recipe with all of us 😁
