To ask my parents to stop talking about my exes?

I feel there's no need for them to be mentioned, it makes me feel uncomfortable and my partner! An example, remember in 2002 when we were at this restaurant and X was there and this happened... they don't need to mention who was there. AIBU?

Your boyfriend sounds a bit of a wet fish if the mention of a boyfriend from over twenty years ago makes him uncomfortable!

How often is this happening?

Hmm, it depends - is your ex a "big" ex, eg. your ex husband of 20 odd years (so pretty enmeshed in family history!) or a boyfriend of 3 months from 2002 randomly? Also, how long have you been in your current relationship? If they're still banging on about an ex when you're in a 5 year relationship, that's a bit different to mentioning something in front of a boyfriend of 6 months.

But also, who cares? People have pasts, why should they pretend / make themselves not mention who was there? It's 22 years ago!

2002 was a bad example, it was a made up example.

It happens pretty much every time I see them tbh and I just feel it's not a relevant part of any story really!

I think you can't eradicate your past; so the stories still need to be told, however no need to say X was there... the story is still as impactful without mentioning X was there... unless of course the story is about X then no sod off and keep it to yourself mum!

My mum used to do this , it was the tip of the iceberg though to be honest . It’s just unnecessary and I’m not sure many parents would do it . Do you otherwise have a good relationship with your parents ?
