MIL keeps buying me clothes

MIL used to buy me clothes as gifts and as I got fatter I asked her not to as I found it a struggle finding things that looked nice, so I was very fussy. Now I am not fat (having lost 5st) she's started up again. A knitted skirt I got for Xmas was returned to M&S and exchanged for some spring jumpers, and now she has bought me a jumper (for my birthday in summer) which I opened (egged on by DH) as I knew it wouldn't be my style. I tried to return it today, but it was bought in February so they wouldn't accept it. So now I have a horrible granny jumper I won't wear and it feels like a real waste of £35. How can I tell her to stop buying clothes for me? It seems such a crime for decent things to go to waste as I just won't wear them.

Give her back the jumper saying it doesn’t suit you but you were unable to exchange it as it’s beyond the store’s returns policy window. And then give back every single item of clothing she gives you in future.

I would donate it all and if she asks you where it is, just tell her it didn’t fit and you gave it to charity, you’re sorry but you told her not to buy you any clothes but didn’t want to hurt her feelings.

She sounds really sweet OP. I would just smile and say thank you, then pop it in the charity bag. Maybe you could hint/ tell her you’ve seen something you like next time there’s a birthday coming up.

I feel you!
My FIL and his wife used to buy me clothes. One year it was a size 14 blouse from M&S. I don’t wear blouses and I’m a size 10!
I was quite upset that they clearly saw me as a size 14!
I took it back to swap it and it had been bought 18 months prior and so was in the sale. I got £3 on a gift card instead 🫣
Then they bought me the most hideous ‘cricket jumper’ from another shop that was a size 16!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Luckily that was worth a £25 gift card in the sale and I bought something that fit me and that i liked.
I get the impression FIL’s wife is buying stuff got herself and changes her mind or has forgotten to take it back.
The last item was a pair of elastic waisted jeans. These were a size 12 so almost the right size 🙄
They went in the charity bag as they were from Peacocks!
