Long life milk

A and B work in an office together. Tea, coffee, milk, etc are brought in by members of the team on an ad hoc basis and shared.

A brought in UHT milk this morning. B doesn’t like UHT - A knows this but always has UHT at home so it’s convenient. At lunchtime, B asked A to pick up some normal milk from the local supermarket while she was out.

A declined because she can’t be arsed going slightly out of her way and queuing in a supermarket when she already brought some milk in this morning.

Yabu - A is a meany
Yanbu - B can get their own milk if they don’t like it.

Why can’t B go to the supermarket themselves and get it on their lunch break?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/05/2024 13:48

You are 'A' and I claim my £5.

Mothership4two · 02/05/2024 14:09

I hate UHT and won't drink it so I'd be bringing in my own milk. I can understand B not being happy there's no alternative.

Unless there is a backstory, A doesn't sound that pleasant to get something they know a member of the team particularly doesn't like. However I can understand not wanting to use up a lunch hour to go out of their way and queue somewhere. B was obviously pointedly asking for it to be substituted and could have gone in their own lunchtime. One could easily just bring in what they know everyone likes and the other could easily just take in a pint or so every day.

TipsyKoala · 02/05/2024 14:30

Anyone buying UHT milk when they could buy fresh is unreasonable, it tastes gross.

Haydenn · 02/05/2024 14:31

I think you should just both bring your own milk. I don’t think it is particularly fair if A is using B’s milk but then expects B to bring their own. UHT is pretty rank.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 02/05/2024 14:32

There's nothing wrong with UHT milk once it's been refrigerated, we've used it on site here for over a year. I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and fresh once it's cold

Starbugg · 02/05/2024 14:33

What happens if it’s a brand of tea that one person doesn’t like but the other likes?

tulippa · 02/05/2024 15:07

Everyone should just bring in their own milk if they're that bothered. 🙂 One of the reasons I stopped having milk in tea or coffee was to avoid all this faff.

Haven’t had this with tea yet but there was a cake related incident

I can definitely tell the difference. UHT makes vile tea (and rubbish coffee). My heart sinks if you go to buy a hot drink and you see those little plastic pots.

If we are having an overnight hotel stay I always take a pint of fresh milk for the room. I have a friend who seems to be permanently on a diet and doesn't keep dairy or alternatives in her house but keeps UHT for guests and I will always take fresh milk - which we laugh about. I have quite strong feelings about UHT! 😆

Good point. A brings milk every week so rarely uses milk brought in by other people.

First world problems :)

If the consensus is that regular milk is preferred, then YABU for bringing in UHT. BUT, I think a bit of leeway should be given. If you were busy and did this as a one-off, then I think they can handle it once... it's not ideal, and I think asking you to go out of your way to buy 'good' milk is a bit excessive.

I don't think either parties are at fault... but this is a one-off suck it up buttercup moment.

GrumpyPanda · 02/05/2024 15:27

If it's shared, it needs to be something every member of the team can agree on - hence regular milk. You wouldn't willy-nilly substitute oat or soy milk without the other parties' agreement.

And the poster who claims they can't taste a difference once refrigerated needs to acquire a new set of taste buds😂

Yeah, I think I may start doing the same. I’m happy getting extra bits during my weekly shop to top up the office kitchen. But I only get 30mins lunch break and I don’t really fancy spending it queuing in a windowless supermarket.

B should get their own milk. It isn’t a restaurant where you can tailor your order. If you don’t like what’s kindly been brought in by someone else, go and get your own.

Ha! I probably would. I quite like oat milk.

So A brings milks in every week? She can get UHT if she wants. If anyone wants something else, they can get their own.

VeraForever · 02/05/2024 15:50

Just get your own milks, job done.

LaWench · 02/05/2024 15:59

I buy UHT skimmed at home for emergency milk. The person who doesn't like it buys their own imo.

I can't tell the difference either.

I would have got my own milk.

stripes92 · 02/05/2024 16:48

A IBU for drinking UHT, it's disgusting.

Each person should bring their own milk if they have different preferences.
