Ex cloned phone?

Littleredpanda23 · 01/05/2024 17:45

This might be a very strange question but does anyone know how common phone cloning is (from just the phone number).
I have a long term restraining order against my ex and since then a few strange things have happened, the main one being that I moved house, didn't tell a soul my new address (apart from a few close friends via whatsapp), made sure i wasn't on anything that would give out my address online, etc...but he still managed to find out where i'd moved to and my new address. I have no idea how he found it (it definitely wasn't from my friends) so now, as mad as this may sound, I'm worried he cloned my phone. Is this something that actually happens in real life? Am I just being crazy? 🤔

Buy a new phone and change your phone number ?

Twiklo · 01/05/2024 18:15

Are your infos on 192.com?

Im not sure about cloning phones, but sending a trojan horse/key logger virus to someone's laptop is quite an easy thing to do. It registers everything you type, sends screenshots, and shares passwords with the hacker

Pretty sure you can't clone a phone. One of your friends has given him the address or he used some other method like a Private investigator.
Or he could have installed an app on your phone that sends him information.

OpalShimmer · 01/05/2024 18:15

Does he know where you work? Could have attached a small tracker to your car either there or at your old house before you moved?

How do you know that he’s aware of where you live? If he has a restraining order and he’s told you/someone else then that’s a police matter to follow up.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/05/2024 18:16

Most likely is he followed you from a known place like work or school

Littleredpanda23 · 01/05/2024 18:17

@2222a I am going to do that now. It didn't occur to me,until I read an article about it today, that it might be how he found out. Hopefully i'm just being silly but it's a very creepy thought.

Or got someone else to.

Op have you gone to the police about your concerns ? It seems really scary he has gone to these lengths to get your new address and to keep tabs on you
I hope you have real life support

TwattyMcFuckFace · 01/05/2024 18:20

How do you know he knows your address?

I agree, it'd be fairly easy to have you followed.

DrJoanAllenby · 01/05/2024 18:22

The people you have told may not have told him but they could have told a partner or friend who then hold him.

Persipan · 01/05/2024 18:27

Worth double checking there aren't any other devices linked to your WhatsApp: https://faq.whatsapp.com/378279804439436/?cms_platform=android

KrisAkabusi · 01/05/2024 18:47

It's possible, but he would either have needed access to your phone, or for you to deliberately download software to your phone outside the normal android or iPhone stores. It's far more likely he used a less techy method such as following you or asking someone else.

OhmygodDont · 01/05/2024 18:51

Could have had an app on your phone. A key logger or such on the laptop. Sharing location via Snapchat to all or even find friends or find my iPhone you’ve forgotten about. A tracker in your car. Registering for voting without making sure it’s not public.

Someone he knows happened to see you. He or someone else followed you or a Pi.

Or his bluffing and doesn’t actually know where you are.

A gp/dentist etc actually sent a change of address letter to the old house. My friend moved house and the council sent her new council tax bill to her old house giving the new tenants her new address. Thankfully she wasn’t fleeing domestic violence or such.

UnbelievableLie · 01/05/2024 18:53

You can't "clone" a phone from knowing someone's number alone, no. But it's easy to follow someone.

OneThreadOnly · 01/05/2024 18:55

I think it’s more likely that either one of your friends has slipped up or he/someone else has followed you home from work/school.

Also a remote possibility he just saw you by coincidence. I have a restraining order against an ex and I saw him at the bottom of my street (I’ve moved) and my heart stopped but he was just going about his business and didn’t even notice me.

Littleredpanda23 · 03/05/2024 18:43

Tbh, from the little i know of his situation now, he seems very settled with his partner, hes been with her for quite a while now and it seems unlikely hes going to rock the boat with her just to annoy me as soon as the restraining order is up. I doubt hes just passing the time with her until the 4 years is up and he can annoy me again, haha so..maybe it was just him seeing me go home one day or someone slipped up and he found out my address. I just had a panic that he had cloned my phone and could get into bank details, etc but thank you all for helping put my mind at rest about that atleast.

More likely he can log into your email....I would guess some email has details of your move?
Or snap maps? Google maps location? Find my iPhone?

Littleredpanda23 · 04/05/2024 10:56

@AnxiousRabbit possibly I don't think I ever told him my password but I suppose he could have guessed.
