Holiday with 2 children

We aren’t sure whether to book flights to come home from holiday a couple of days after we got here.

I have a 4 month old and a 4 year old (I’m only biological mum to 4 month old and have only known 4yo since she was 2 so baby stage new to me!)

We came on holiday yesterday, very excited and we got to airport all fine but there was a power outage and the airport was absolute chaos, horrificly (scarily at times) busy and the most stressful airport experience I have ever had. We just about made the aeroplane after waiting in huge crowds of people all morning and desperately running through the airport, we were only 1 party of 2 who actually made the flight with luggage (hand luggage people were fine) I’m sure some people would have been fine but i found it extremely stressful, not so much the potential missing flight but the crowds (we almost got crushed as there was also a fire alarm and we got trapped in a very small area and doors were locked so no one could get out but more people kept coming)

When we eventually arrived we were told our luggage had not, not only that but they had lost it and have no idea if / when they can get it to us. They only fly to the airport we went to once a day. We have had radio silence since yesterday so I strongly suspect that we may never get our luggage.

We took hardly anything in hand luggage, we aren’t staying in a big place and it’s been really hard to find any clothes at all. I have not been able to get anything for the baby.

We don’t have both girls eczema cream, bath stuff, pyjamas, swimsuits, formula prep machine, steriliser, calpol, piriton, toys/games etc etc. I have managed to get a swimsuit for 4 year old.

weather was torrential rain when we got here and all of this morning, late this afternoon it is a little better but still quite cold. We actually moved the whole trip by 3 days last week as my 4 year old had a chest infection and the weather looked awful.

My 4 year old just finished her antibiotics and is better but not 100%, my baby now has an awful cold and is sounding very chesty and I’m not feeling well either.

Should we just come home? Or should we suck it up and be grateful we can afford a holiday at all in the current climate and try and make the most of it? I’m feeling really stressed but I don’t know if that’s unreasonable or not! DH is very supportive but not sure what to do either

YABU - stay and try and enjoy it
YANBU - consider going home if you don’t get your cases

Is it a package, if so contact the rep to chase luggage, locate clothing etc. or the hotel may be able to advise. Where are you , other posters may have ideas to make things more comfortable?

MidnightPatrol · 30/04/2024 17:58

I’d suck it up.

If you need the various bath items your mention - I’m sure people locally have babies and need eczema creams and so on. Can you ask them where they go? Taxi to a big supermarket, pharmacy etc? There might be an out of town shopping centre? Ask the hotel staff.

You have my sympathy on the stressful travel - I loathe being made to check in phsyically with baby stuff and being left in a queue for hours / nearly missing your flight as a result. It’s happened to me twice recently and my stress levels were about 1,000.

Icanseethebeach · 30/04/2024 17:59

Where are you?

Kf12g10 · 30/04/2024 18:10

Not a package, we are in Cambrils euro camp , I’ve just gone into the town today (40 euros in taxi!) to look for clothes which I’ve found the basics (cost £400 just for the bare minimum including toiletries etc etc) didn’t see a pharmacy but there must be one somewhere. To be honest I think my anxiety levels are sky high as worried about both girls being poorly and needing a doctor which might be completely OTT but have felt anxious after baby

Im finding having the baby here much harder than I thought, we don’t have a coat or anything for her, no waterproofs etc and she’s not sleeping well either for naps or last night so that’s added to things. Can’t seem to shake the anxiety even though it might be silly

I don't think you're being silly OP, it's totally understandable to feel that way, especially with 2 small children.
It's hard with 2 littles when you've actually got all the equipment, let alone when you don't.
I don't know whether you should come back or not , but I suppose the question for you to think about is- Of you were to look back on this in say 6 months time, would you be glad you stayed, or glad you left.

Good luck x

It’s not you, holidays with babies and small children are horrific, they are not relaxing they are stressful and tiring! You’re there now so make the most of it but if I was you I’d holiday in the Uk until youngest is at least 4! You can chalk it all up to experience!

Icanseethebeach · 30/04/2024 19:07

Hmm. I’m not sure what I would do. The weather in Spain in April was always at best going to be changable. Did you make any plans for poor weather? As in do you have any ideas about what you can do to make your holiday enjoyable?

@ErikaReadsTheDailyMail gives some good advice.

Nightmare! Have the airline said if you’re expecting to get them back soon.

Radio silence from then, they said they need to ‘locate’ them and then they will let us know and let us know which flight they will be on but they haven’t apparently even located them yet.. it’s Ryanair so I don’t hold much hope

Personally I’d go home.

I'm so pleased for you! Make sure you claim on travel insurance for the stuff you had to buy while you were waiting for your bags.

Purplebunnie · 02/05/2024 11:43

Wonderful, glad you are enjoying yourself x
